Auto data for new ration cards in Europe due soon

MAINZ-KASTEL, Germany ­— The deadline is drawing near for those who need to update vehicle registration slips before the startup of the new AAFES fuel ration card system this summer.

Information on file after May 22 will serve as the database to make and issue the fuel ration cards, according to Army officials. In addition to the ration aspect ­— 400 liters per vehicle per month in Germany — the debit-type cards would replace the paper coupons currently in use.

A typical adjustment, handled at a vehicle registration office, could be the inclusion of a spouse or teen’s name, which would necessitate a passport or Social Security number. Conflicting data could complicate the process of getting multiple fuel ration cards for all eligible drivers in the family.

If the information on a driver’s current vehicle registration is accurate, then no action is required. Nonetheless, Army officials are encouraging people to take a moment to retrieve the document from their glove compartment or sun visor and review it for any mistakes or deficiencies.

The fuel ration cards, mandated by the German government to counter abuse, will be issued by mail to authorized personnel in Germany from July to December. The Army and Air Force Exchange Service, which is facilitating the effort, plans to send teams into specific communities as the cards are arriving.
