Editorial: Don’t phish own waters

In the pervasive online scam known as “phishing,” con artists create official-looking e-mails that appear to come from credit card companies, banks, charities, government agencies and other organizations, and then mass-blast them onto the Internet.

The goal is to trick people into divulging personal information that can be used to steal their identities and commit fraud.

Recently, Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command sent out an urgent alert about the latest such scam.

Someone was phishing in the military’s dot-mil domain with a bogus e-mail falsely sporting the MWR command’s official logo, supposedly offering free and discount tickets to theme parks and other attractions.

Less than an hour later, the command issued another alert, this one brimming with outrage: The Army’s own information security command had launched the scam as part of an official exercise — without telling MWR.
