Editorial: Adding amphibs a must

The Marine Corps says it needs at least 33 amphibious ships to take two Marine expeditionary brigades to war.

Thats an order todays Navy cant fill.

Technically, the Navy already has 33 amphibs but only if you include its two command ships and six aging Austin-class amphibious transport docks, which are 36 to 40 years old.

The fact is, the Navy is years away from fulfilling the Corps requirement. It needs to spend money now to replace those older ships and solidify its amphibious fleet.

That means answering the Corps request to buy 11 San Antonio-class LPDs two more than the Navy plans to buy.

uhc comment: A San Antonio-class ship costs $802,000,000 (in 1999 dollars) -->
