Mideast brief: Detainee dies while held in custody at U.S. base

A detainee being held at a U.S. base in western Iraq died at a military medical facility on Wednesday, officials said Thursday.

The detainee was identified as a 20-year-old male by a spokesman with the U.S. military command in Anbar province. The man died after “he was transported to the afternoon of Feb. 19 for medical assistance,” a statement read.

The detainee was being held at Al Asad Air Base before being transported to the medical facility. The cause of death is under investigation, and no other details were released.

In most cases involving detainee deaths, an autopsy is performed before the detainee’s remains are released to family members.
