RAF MILDENHALL, England — Thick blankets of fog engulfed U.S. bases here Wednesday, triggering halts in flight operations and morning delays for many airmen and schoolchildren.
Decreased visibility forced RAF Mildenhall, home of 100th Air Refueling Wing’s KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft, to cancel a majority of its flights, spokesman Master Sgt. Charles Tubbs said.
Foggy weather also hit nearby RAF Lakenheath and grounded its first two sets of F-15 fighter jet flights, with a third set looking doubtful as of Wednesday afternoon, according to spokeswoman Airman 1st Class Torri Ingalsbe.
In addition, both bases issued two-hour work and school delays in the morning as a result of the severe fog.
At Mildenhall, a road condition yellow was in full effect all day, advising drivers to be extra careful on its roads. Many vehicles could be seen piercing through the dense white mist with their fog lights. There also was a driving restriction on flight line roads at one point during the day, Tubbs said.
