Getting ticks off pets, out of homes is a year-round chore

Cindy Davis, and her daughter Ashlynn, 3, play with their dog Karson Friday in their living room at Yokota Air Base. The Davises have had to have their home sprayed three times for ticks.

Getting ticks off pets, out of homes is a year-round chore

YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — When staying in a hotel, Cindy Davis sometimes checks under the sheets before getting into bed — just in case some type of creepy-crawly might already be there.

She never thought she would have to do it in her own home.

On New Year’s Eve when getting ready for bed, she spotted a tick crawling across her sheets.

After getting rid of the parasite, she checked around for more. She found a small group crawling on the wall behind the headboard of her bed.

Four days later, members of Yokota’s entomology shop came to Davis’ base residence to spray.

1. I live in the north
but I'm visiting my daughter in Florida this week. It doesn't get cold enough here to kill off the ticks and fleas. It's a constant problem with her two dogs, not to mention bugs that look like a cross between a big cricket and a roach. I too check the bed before retiring at night. Cold freezing weather does have it's advantages.

2. Using the stuff you put on a dog's shoulder blades
and spraying the backyard regularly keeps the ticks and fleas away here in South Texas.

3. I got bit by a tick a few weeks ago here in Virginia..
it came off one of the dogs, I'm sure. We've had cold weather too, but I guess not enough. Very strange.
