Dempsey nominated to take helm at USAREUR

ARLINGTON, Va. — Lt. Gen. Martin Dempsey has been nominated to receive a fourth star and become the new commander of U.S. Army Europe, the Army announced Tuesday.

Since August, Dempsey has served as deputy commander of U.S. Central Command.

Dempsey, who needs to be confirmed by the Senate, would replace Gen. David McKiernan, who has been nominated to take command of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

No date has been announced on when Dempsey would assume his new post, said Army spokesman Paul Boyce.

In other news, Brig. Gen. Scott West, commanding general of 21st Theater Support Command, United States Army Europe and Seventh Army, Germany, has been promoted to major general, the Army announced.
