Poll question: Next FPS I should own?
I beat COD World at War, COD4 and Halo 3. What's next for my XBOX 360? I heard Gears of War is third-person which is no bueno.

Ideas:

Far Cry 2
Fallout 3
Left 4 Dead

Your vote?

1. Fallout 3 isn't really a FPS
It's an RPG with some FPS elements.

Left 4 Dead is a FPS but bear in mind that it's primarily an online game. While it does have a single player campaign you won't get much utility out of the game unless you're playing on Xbox Live.

Far Cry 2 is great, but you may find some of the gameplay conventions annoying - you have to travel a long way to get to missions, for example. And the story is a bit of a muddle. It's very immersive though - the environments are awesome, and shit blows up real good, so these things may not bother you.

If you haven't played either of the Gears Of War games then you are missing out. Even though they aren't FPS, they are two of the most fun shooters you will play. You should be able to pick up the first one for cheap these days.

Bottom line is all the games you have listed are well worth playing, but for different reasons.

3. I'm not big on FPS's but...
I'll throw in my two cents anyway :D

I you have not tried Modern Warfare, go for that. If you have and can wait, it looks like the next one is slated for 11/10/2009... not too far off.

Fallout 3 - Like EarlG said, this is more of an RPG then a FPS but is still a wicked good game. You night want to wait for this as well though since they are coming out with bundle packs that will contain the DLC scenarios at a discounted price.

Sorry to say, I've not tried any of your other choices but... Whatever you decide on, you should come back and write us a review of what you thought. Reviews are good!

4. I'll second EarlG's reply
I will say, though, that if you have a PC capable of either Fallout3 or Left 4 Dead, you should get them for the PC and not the 360.

The reason? Mods. Both games have a built-in editor for making your own stuff- maps, skins, even new game models. 360 players are restricted to pay-to-play DLC packs; PC users get a whole galaxy of mods (for example, someone recently made a Left 4 Dead map for the PC that recreates the first dungeon in the original Legend of Zelda in first-person mode, with traps in the right places, a couple of those Dodongos creatures, and the hand wall traps. And zombies. They even put the map floating on the ceiling, like a HUD).

Also, if you can get Prototype for the 360, do so if you haven't already. Yes, it's third-person, but...

Since I don't know what you already have, I would also suggest Crysis or Bioshock. Or, if it's available on the 360, spring for the Orange Box from Valve; you'll get Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, Team Fortress 2, and the very entertaining game, Portal. Again, if your PC can handle The Orange Box, get it for the PC, not the 360 (mods again!).

5. The Gears of War third person is over the shoulder
I find it as easy to play as first person, really.

I voted for Left 4 Dead. I rented it through Gamefly. I don't currently have a good Xbox Live connection or any local gaming buddies, so I didn't play it online or co-op, but I enjoyed the single player campaign a lot. I would say that in the world of FPS, there is no better game if you want one you can pick up and just start shooting, and not invest a lot of time into it. And if you do have XBox Live or a friend to play with you, I think that the co-op and multiplayer modes have a lot of potential for massive enjoyment. I have heard that playing as a zombie in the multiplayer matches isn't all its cracked up to be, but maybe that's because you need to be a lot more sneakier than when you are playing as a human. I don't know.

I liked Fallout 3, but for some reason, after my first play through and a little ways into my second, I lost interest. Don't know why - that didn't happen with Oblivion at all.

6. Offline = Fallout 3, online = Battlefield: Bad Company
Edited on Wed Jul-29-09 12:13 PM by ZombieHorde
Fallout 3 can be played over and over again, encountering new things each time.

Bad Company has significantly more stuff in it than any other online shooter.

7. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
11-10-09

Gears of War 2 is good as is Fallout. Fallout will take forever to complete at 100%. L4D is only good on XBL. Halo 3 ODST is coming out in September.

8. Gears 2 is down to $35, for used copies, at Game Stop.

It's third person, over the shoulder like Resident Evil, but it plays just like an FPS.

I got it a couple of weeks ago and haven't been able to stop playing it. The campaign is fun, with single player or online / split screen co op, but the Horde mode is my favorite. You can play offline by yourself or online with up to five people against 50 waves of Locust hordes on all the multiplayer maps.

Edited to add a recommendation for Resident Evil 5. It's got a good campaign with co op as well and the Mercenaries mode is like Horde mode in Gears of War.

Either of those two are well worth the price, especially if they are pre owned.
