I would HIGHLY recommend the Dark Cloud games. Sure they are basically cheap Zelda knockoffs (I renamed the guy from the first game "Lawsuit") but they are really good cheap Zelda knockoffs, especially the 2nd one. The first one was alright, but I suspect I think I loved it so much because at the time it came out there were literally no decent RPGs on the PS2 and I was going out of my mind waiting for Final Fantasy X to come out. At any rate both are Greatest Hits now and probably can be had for less than 20 each.
It's more of a survival horror game, but you ought to check out the best damn title on the Gamecube that no one has played, a little gem called Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Imagine if someone made a video game out of the Cthulhu mythos and that is pretty much it. It's REALLY Lovecraftian in look and feel...a very creepy game and I'm someone who yawned all the way through Silent Hill. The neatest part is the "sanity" system. In addition to the usual health and magic meter, you have a sanity meter. Basically the more you run into whacked-out creatures the crazier you get. You'll start to hear voices and stuff. The fun really starts when your sanity meter gets low and you actually start hallucinating. Like you'll cast a heal spell but end up exploding instead. None of these insanity effects can actually hurt you, but they add a lot of flavor to the game. The game also has a lot of replay value because you can take one of three paths through it, and if you go through all three you unlock the "real" ending to the game, which is a real trip.
The game's been out forever, I got it for like $10 at my local Gamestop and have been pimping it out to anyone who will listen, it is that cool.
