Mexico Paper Tries to Put Hex on US Soccer Team

Mexico and the United States play a World Cup qualifying match on Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio, and a Mexican newspaper is hoping some old black magic might help its team win.

The Mexican sports daily newspaper "Record" is encouraging fans to cast a voodoo hex on the U.S. team by offering coupons that can be redeemed for voodoo-doll likenesses of U.S. players at Blockbuster video stores in Mexico City, according to the Associated Press.

"Hold a needle firmly between your thumb and index finger and prick slowly the part of the doll where you want to affect the opponent," the instructions say. The back of the doll's jersey read, "Gringos," AP reports.

RadioShack was the original distribution partner of the paper, but dropped out after learning details of the promotion. Blockbuster came on board last week.

This isn't the TEAM, this is the PLAYERS. This is NOT FUNNY.

1. As I understand it,

voodoo dolls are only effective if you have something personal of the one you want to hex attached to the doll.

Not going to do them any good to stick pins in little dolls. That's just dumb.

I know that I feel stymied in the prayer thread when I don't have a picture to work with. But do keep in mind that pictures can work well, and soccer players' pictures are all over the internet and they could be printed out and attached to the dolls.

And some people are either lucky enough or talented enough to work effectively with a name only. If masses of people are doing this in Mexico, this is not a good situation at all, IMHO.

Shame on the paper for encouraging something like that. I know that most people think it's harmless fun, but it's not.

One comfort is that these people are likely not actual practitioners and don't have the wherewithal to build up their power and focus, so their efforts will be scattered and minimally ineffective at best. Still...

5. Never underestimate the power of fans

Look at how many athletes and performing artists talk about feeding off the energy given by fans. Consider the power of home team advantage and the drain of competing where the opponents have a much larger group of fans. Heck just look at how families and friends get riled up over sports and the amount of psychic slime that accumulates! Most fans are not trained but they certainly are focused. Enough to make someone sick or more prone to injury? I don't know but they certainly will be churning out a toxic soup of vile energy. I look forward to helping thwart bad intentions towards any of the teams involved!

It is like some evil bad guy in a movie intending to rain meteors on a city but they turn in to warm fuzzies that spread peace, love, & healing instead! he he ha ha ha!
