Insight, and that time between waking and sleeping
The two really big sort of psychic type experiences I have had in my life were in the form of thoughts or experiences that I had when awakening in the morning. One was a contact from a friend who had passed on, that had a profoundly comforting feeling. I heard her voice, but forgot what she said. Oops.:) Another time I had a premonition that something was badly wrong with the mother in law of an acquaintance of mine. She died from an infection from a minor burn about a week later. Oh, I almost forgot I had a weird airplane/airport dream the morning of 9/11 (weird Nazi archetype in it too).

Most of the time I just walk around not having psychic experiences, although I get a few hints of something now and then.

But, since my experience the other morning, where I "dreamed" doing finger muscle testing of economic trends, I have decided to try to utilize that time a little better. I'm now trying to train myself to "test" things mentally as I have that groggy feeling when I wake up. Whereas I don't think I really get many future premonitions, I am trying to see if I can pick up psychic type things in that time frame.

So, before going to bed I just set my intentions to remember to mentally test things in that time frame, and see how they work out. I can't say I have had any specific results yet, but I do feel that this will take a lot of practice.

I'm not much of an "altered state" type person, can't go into a trance, really (ala Cayce, for instance, or people that channel), so I am trying this instead.

I kind of like the idea of this because I like the idea of being fully in this dimension when awake.

I'd love for other people here to try this and see if this can work. Any thoughts?

I think that phase in between is called the hypnogogic state. And there in it lies for me a lot of insight.

The profound one that I can recall now is before my husband's ex-wife died, I was lucid while sleeping, hearing a man and woman talking about a boy. She saying to him something like: He can take the school bus to school. He saying to her: He's just not used to it - And then something like: don't worry we'll figure something out.

I fully awakened wondering what was that all about. I didn't even recognize the voices. A few years later the ex-wife died and we had to take the kids in. My husband and I had the same conversation about how to juggle our schedules and get his son to school. I think in a way I was being prepared for a life-altering change.

Since recognizing how effective this state can be, I try to remain in bed for a few minutes because I seem to be somewhat lucid at the tail-end of a dream full of information and think of it like uploading stuff.

2. Past life experiences
I have had at least two of what I consider past life views or experiences while in that "in between" state. I might have to see if I can see anything future, I have not tried that. I wasn't trying when I had the past life experiences, it was just spontaneous.

I don't do altered states well either. I have gone very deep during meditation before, and have experienced some interesting stuff that way, once I seemed to hear my grandfather trying to tell me something from beyond, another time I saw the galaxy rotating as if from a distance. That isn't something I can cause to happen during meditation with anything approaching regularity though. It is far more common for me to itch and twitch my way through any attempts to achieve inner peace. :silly:

3. I've never considered the hypnogogic state to be a source of information...
regarding the metaphysical. Certainly a free-flow associative state, and an important one to learn to transit in awareness (learn to move in and out of this state, between wakefulness and back)...interesting. I can't say if I've ever had information occur to me there.

Neat discussion.

4. In between worlds--a powerful state
I'm a big fan of any sort of "in-between", and this is doubly powerful, being in between waking and sleeping and usually occurring at dawn, between night and day (if you sleep at night).

I've found that a good way to ensure getting some insights just before you fall asleep or just before you wake is to ask your guides for a message before you settle down to sleep. :hi:

5. This is about the only time I have "seen" things as well
things that I still do not understand. What a great excercise- thanks for sharing it with us.

6. who says one needs to deep trance to do this work?
some people do better that way, many do not need it or their systems simply don't work that way.

Some of the most intense experiences I have had happened in the hypnogogic state as I was falling asleep. Past life memories, contact with guides, and have had a few deceased show up asking for help. One wanted me to pass on a message to his wife, the other wanted help getting out of an emotional whirlwind from traumatic death which helped him cross over.

On a more mundane level this is a great time to think of something you are trying to remember or a problem you would like to solve. Focus intently for a minute or two as are getting sleepy. Often just before I go fully to sleep I will pop wide awake remembering where I put the missing item or think of (or am given) a way to fix the problem.
