My dog is back in the hospital -- again :(
He was in Friday morning to Monday morning. The vet released him because he was keeping food and water down and seemed energetic. Monday evening he threw up twice, and refused to eat, although drank some water. I took him back Tuesday morning.

He's been in since Tuesday morning and is unable to keep anything down. They have had him on IV and are running more tests. The earliest he'll be able to come home, if he can keep food and water down for 24 hours, is Saturday.

He was diagnosed with pancreatitis last Saturday, in case you haven't seen the earlier threads. I am visiting him every day before work. He is kind of listless, but other than that, doesn't seem to be in any pain.

Will be sending postive energy. Hoping for the best. Give him a couple of extra gentle ear scritches for me.

EDIT: Maybe there is something in your home that he is reacting to?
He is on special food, right? Maybe you need to give him filtered water? Just trying to come up with some left-field ideas...
Have you tried one of those pet fountains to get him to drink lots of water?

3. I'm so sorry he had a relapse
hopefully it won't be for long.

Twenty years ago, my cat Lucifer was deathly sick and I took him to the vet. The vet performed an operation on a rare condition that he had. Well he was still listless when I visted him in the vets the next day and wouldn't eat. Then I got the idea to go and get a can of his favorite food and bring it back to his cage and hand feed him. He wanted to eat like a horse. The caretakers had to stop him from eating too much. I suggest you go get his favorite food and bring it to him and hand feed him at the vets.

Luci lived another 12 years after that.

4. He has to be on a special diet
He can't have anything to eat except Science Diet ID, canned. He ate it Monday, a whole can, and didn't throw up then, which is why the vet released him on Monday.

5. UPDATE -- Friday
I went to see Magic this morning. He didn't look good at all. His abdomen is very bloated, and he's lost even more weight. He didn't throw up again yesterday, and was able to keep some food and water down. However, he's very listless and depressed.

The vet is doing more bloodwork this morning and taking him to have an ultrasound done. He had xrays, which did not show any blockages. At this point, it's not looking very good. I just want him to be better and come home. :(

10. ANOTHER UPDATE -- bad news :(
The vet ran another series of blood and urine tests this morning. His abdomen has become bloated and he also has low blood sugar, so she recommended I take him to the bigger animal hospital to get an ultrasound done.

The results of the ultrasound were not good. He has a massive growth pressing on his pancreas (which is why my vet thought it was pancreatitis). The fluid in his abdomen was bloody. When they examined it, it was filled with cancerous cells. They wanted to do exploratory surgery, but basically told me even if they got the big tumor out, it would most likely not do much for him.

I called my vet, and she talked to the animal surgeon at the hospital. She told me if I wanted to do the surgery, she would do it tomorrow, no cost, if I wanted to do it for peace of mind. But, it probably would not do any good.

So I took him home, and am going to have to have him put to sleep tomorrow. He is not eating, losing weight, and very listless. He's gone downhill very quickly -- he was doing fine until about 2 weeks ago, and now he doesn't even want to get up and go outside.

Needless to say, I'm very upset. But I am going to spend tonight with him, and make sure he knows how much I love him. He is absolutely the best dog I've ever had.

to lose a great friend like this.
You are doing the loving, unselfish thing to let him go before he gets much worse.
As difficult as it may seem now, it is a blessing that this final illness has been short..only two weeks. His life has been filled with love and you are going to make sure it is that way up until the final moment.
May the journey over the Rainbow bridge be gentle. I know he will feel safe and loved, cradled in your arms, and be buried where all good dogs are buried, deep in your heart.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
