financially. It is not just food that is a problem.
A member of our family has a dog who required small surgery on her hip. It turned out to be a benign cyst. For the pain after, the vet gave her Previcox. The poor animal had a very bad reaction to this medicine and ended up in the Intensive Care of a large regional veterinary hospital. she was in intensive care for 29 days. One or another member of our family went to see her every day, bringing things like roast chicken to try and force her to eat. She had tubes and wires coming out of her everywhere and was so sad looking that all you could do is cry as you pet her.
She started to look worse and on the 29th day, my husband had the Vet call my daughter to get permission to bring the dog home. Nothing positive was happening, she was looking worse and not eating at all.
Once she was home, treatment was administered my my daughters boyfriend. She had to have intravenous water. Still would only eat tiny bits of food. She gradually got better and is now fine. Takes only some special pill to help with a slight bit of incontinence. She had a urinary catheter in for a month and that did some muscle damage but this pill helps constrict the muscles so she won't piddle when she gets up to walk around. Keeps it in complete control.
There is great controversy about this medicine. Google Previcox. (Other medicines for animals too.)
The bottom line is, $24,800 dollars later plus check-ups every 90 days has really hurt my daughter. We all chip in when we can to help pay the bill off.
This dog is the world to all of us. I'm sure you all feel that way about your pets. I will never understand how someone can be cruel to an animal who gives you nothing but love in return for your care.
Read the story on this link. Same kind of dog. We were lucky, ours had a better result. I guess the point of my long story is that there should be laws governing the medicine given to our pets too.
