DUer 'prozacnation' is currently bottle feeding 2 kittens,
Edited on Mon Mar-07-05 03:34 AM by alittlelark
and is fostering a pregnant mama cat (at least 3 in there). I visited w/ her (she is my sis-in law) for 4 hours on Sunday. She has never done anything like this before and is kinda freaking'. The bottle feeders are 6 days old. I think she is doing GREAT!!! She is convinced she will kill them. She needs some words of advice/encouragement.

I'll tell her about this thread in the morning.

2. You might want to use the mama cat as a surrogate mother
Once she has the kittens.

I read "Cat Talk" by Sonya Fitzpatrick (the Pet Psychic) and she wrote that one woman smeared tuna all over the orphan kittens and presented the kitties to the mom cat. Mama Cat licked the tuna off the kittens and accepted them as her own.

3. I bottle fed one kitten that became the pet love of my life!
His name was Peewee. I lost him a year and a half ago at age 15 to HCM (a genetic heart disease). Granted, I wasn't alone in raising him; he was born to a showcat that was left behind by a college friend's roommate. The showcat got knocked up by a feral, and five kittens were the result. Only Peewee was bottle fed (mom rejected him because he was the runt). He survived quite well and became a very clingy, loving "velcro kitty". Here he is at two months asking for "mom" to pick him up an snuggle him:

If she's feeding them KMR milk every 2-3 hours,, they should be fine. It is exhausting work, though! I also bottle raised a raccoon kit, and they scream like human infants when they're hungry; sets off the whole maternal instinct thing, lol! Tell her not too worry too much; if she has the energy to keep their bellies full and ensure that they stay warm, then they should be fine. Kudos to her for being a good soul and taking on the task!

5. What a wonderful thing for Prozacnation to do. That is going to guarantee
a wonderfully loyal and loving little kitten for her, and a healthy Mom and kittens, too. I think that it might be worth trying to see if the new Mom will adopt the little baby.
Good luck Prozacnation. Keep us posted, and please let us see pictures.

6. Good luck to you
it's really hard when kittens are that young. It's round the clock care. Hope you are getting some help.

Someone else here has done this numerous times before but I don't remember who it is? Anyone?
