My monitor's lovely waistline
Sorry to bug you wonderful people again-

Now it's the monitor - 19" KDS visual sensations about 5-6 years old and according to the KDS site, a discontinued model

It seems to be determined to have an hourglass figure, while I prefer it full and plump.

Adjusting the settings on the monitor does absolutely nothing. As goofy as it sounds - for a few days I've been able to slap it on the sides of the case a couple of times, it cooperates, and goes back to full width. This is a good thing, because that's the extent of my monitor fixing capabilities.

But, this morning - no go. It won't even try to fatten up. Not flickering or anything, still holds a really steady and good display, and I can read everything, but it's in the shape of an apple core. I can't scroll down without adjusting the mouse to curve in then out since the center is so indented.

*sigh* Is this a sign of it's end of days? :(

1. She's A Gonner.
Based on my own experience with that exact monitor, your lucky it lasted this long. The first big monitor I ever purchased was a KDS vs195. It was replaced by KDS three times and the last one I received from them died about a month after the warranty ran out. Junk it and get a decent 19" lcd. They are relatively inexpensive these days.

3. Yeah, I was sorta afraid of that.
Thanks for the response and the link. Any tips on what to look for in an lcd monitor? Is the specific one you linked to a good one? Is there a reason for getting a wide screen as opposed to a regular one? a brand name more reliable than others? a website more reputable than others? If shipping is reasonable, I'd just as soon order one online as to go out and shop for one.

Unfortunately, the bottom line right now is the bottom line, so price is a huge factor - have to do something though, I'm going cross-eyed.

I've been wandering around a bit and found this, but I really don't know what to look for:

5. Well...
WS is in no way a requirement but if you watch movies or do any work with video you will appreciate it. For general productivity apps you also get some extra horizontal real estate to work with multiple projects on the same screen. Brand name is a tossup but I would stick to the Viewsonics, Samsungs, NECs etc. That example from Newegg was just what came up first in my quick search. Some other vendors to consider are Zip Zoom Fly, MWAVE, Page Computers and Provantage as they are all pretty good. BTW shipping on the monitor I provided a link to is free. Planar makes a decent monitor and I buy a lot of touchscreen LCDs from them. Only one has gone bad. The model that you linked to looks like it's a bit long in the tooth though. Nothing terrible, just older.

6. Nothing terrible, just older...
sounds exactly like me. :) My 4 year old grandson told me this morning that he loves my wrinkledy face. - So I locked him in a closet - (not really)

Main usage is internet, playing with fractals, Spider Solitaire and TextTwist - nothing exciting. I have a tiered desk with a tv, dvd player and vcr off to the side for movies, so the tv thing's not important. Speakers, eh - not necessary, either - have a set of 5 with a footrest/sub that work really well. So, I'm thinking a regular 19" would be just fine.

Viewsonic, Samsung and NEC - ok, and thanks. I'll keep those names in mind.

Thanks for taking the time to let me talk this out - and apologies for the delayed response - distractions abound today.

7. Something Cool To Do...
would be to relocate the TV and pickup a TV tuner card for your PC. If that's what your using your PC for the Planar should be fine. My only concern is that to get that great price (and it is a pretty good price) you have to use a rebate and, unless they're instant, I hate rebates Don't get me started on TexTwist BTW, my wife was addicted to it for months. I still think she sneaks in a few games here and there. As long as you reply within 48-hours it's all good.

Good luck with your purchase.

2. I have the same exact monitor you have
and its about 5 years old. It has been great but it's getting a little dark. I liked it so well I bought the newer version about 2 years ago and It's already in the dumpster. It was junk but this older one is still working. I myself would not buy another one from KDS.

4. Yeah, I've been really happy with this particular monitor.

My son has one, too. Their customer service was really on top of it when we had to have one replaced shortly after purchasing it. Sorry to hear about the newer model being junk, since I was thinking about a 'customer loyalty purchase'.

Guess I'll steer clear of that - thank you and jayfish for sharing your experiences.

note: 'Yeah' is the word of the day in the subject field
