1. Uh oh!
You've let the magic smoke escape. That's what really makes your computer work you know.

Seriously, it could mean that or it could mean a blown power supply (which often takes out the motherboard, and assorted other components) as well. It's never a sign of anything good.

2. I am hoping it is just the power supply...
but I am thinking it is the MB...oh well.

3. Smoke is not good
If you have another power supply handy, connect it to the board and see if everything works. If it doesn't, it's fried. What kind of system do you have? Most of the time the board shuts down before the CPU and drives are blown.

5. Why would a power supply/motherboard blow like that?
Is there anything I could have done to prevent it?

8. Could be too much dust
in the box and caused it overheat. Could be just because it wanted to, at least it seems that way to me sometimes. I periodically get a can of air and blow out the box-it seems to cut down on power supply failures- but then I work my computers pretty hard.

6. Could be a capacitor......have you looked real close at the components on
the motherboard? Check the power supply first...if you have a multi-meter you can check to see if you are getting the rated voltage from the plug.

10. Hopefully not a flux capacitor or
he may never be able to return to the present from the future!
