another lame question from Kali - updating AVG
ok I still haven't updated since last May. the 7.5.blah blah version I have on there wants me to load an 8.5 version and it never loads (that great slow dial up I have) and that is probably the main reason I haven't done this. Anyway, started fiddling with it again today but went to the AVG site itself and see it is now at version 9.0...soooooo my question is multi-part - should I keep trying the update from what I have on here already? Or should I do a whole new download from cnet (I guess)? and IF I do that do I need to uninstall the old one first?

1. AVG Forum has detailed Uninstall/ Re-install instructions.

The uninstall tool will (should) remove older versions so you can do a clean re-install of the newer one.

2. not just dial up
monumentally SLOW dial up

Thanks for the forum rec. (I am pretty much dunce level - well maybe a little above - only thanks to this DU group!) I tried a non-DU forum (for Epson, I think?) once and have been a little gun shy since.

So you think I need to get an uninstall tool? I can't uninstall from control panel add or remove?

3. The complete instructions are on the first link in my reply.

Including the download link for the AVG REMOVAL TOOL. It's specifically designed by AVG and used only for AVG REMOVAL.

ETA: You could just use add/remove to uninstall the latest version you have installed presently. The removal tool is designed to remove all traces of previous versions. Whether you have to use it (removal tool) or not depends on a lot of different factors, too many to list here. I merely mentioned the removal tool as a way to get a clean re-install of the newest version.

5. You may need to take a flash drive and a road trip to a library to do your downloads. Call ahead and

find out if they support uploads to a flash drive. You'll also find out if they are tech savvy or when would be the best chance of catching someone who is.

Edit: I think you should look at Microsoft Security Essentials new antivirus software it is rated on a par with AVG and Avast.
