Did the HD go bad, or could it be the IDE cable or bios? How long are IDE cables supposed to last? It still detects the master (C) drive.

3. OK - what has changed recently, if anything?
Is this a drive that has been in there and just suddenly stopped being recognized?

Or is it a new install? If new, try the jumpers in the cable select position (CSL) and make sure the cable connections are correct.

Is the disk capacity too large for your motherboard? If so, they usually provide a disk with the drive and an option to set the drive capacity lower.

Also, I seem to remember something abut the DMA setting somewhere...

4. oh, also, sometimes installing certain software
in particular, ones that involve media players, seem to somehow mess a setting up that results in this issue -- sorry I can't be more specific, just something I seem to rememeber

So, have you installed any new software right before this started happening? Or any new updates to anything?
