I can minimise it to some extent by keeping the speaker on he bottom command bar quite low, while raising the one video-clips or music sites, but it's very annoying hearing it in the background all the time, when the mute box isn't ticked.

1. Bad connection or wiring would be the first thing I'd check.

2. Are they powered speakers?
If so, turn the volume on the speakers down and the computer sound up.

4. No, there are no volume controls on the speakers. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

5. Lately, we've been using a cheap cyclonic vacuum cleaner, which
sems to stir up more dust than it picks up, and the old, black brief case I have the pooter standing on was until a minute ago covered in thick dust.

Is it possible that dust could somehow have got into the speakers? I realise that, if so, wiping its base down now would have been closing the door after the horse had bolted.

7. Bad shielding on the sound card.

If it's a mobo sound system, disable it and try a PCI card. If you already use a PCI card simply try installing a different one.

You can get a fairly decent card for as little as fifteen bucks at almost any retail computer shop.

On edit: If it's a mobo sound system you must disable it from withing the BIOS (at bootup).
