made before sound cards to use the sound card? I found a copy of the first Leisure suit Larry but I can't get any sound, I think it uses the speaker on motherboard which I doubt I have

2. You mean this one?
LiesureSuit Larry & The
Land of the Lounge Lizards

I upgraded to a 386 with a mouse to play this game.
I added a SoundBlaster card, and the game music played through this card, though it did require some configuration. (very primitive now).

IIRC, there is a file in the install directory (setup.exe?) that will give you a few options about the sound card configuration. I suggest just trying different options and then checking to see if the music is working.

BTW. This is an excellent game. Very cutting edge at the time.
