I promised pictures
Here are 3 loaves of the Peasant Bread recipe in the book Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a Day. The 4th loaf was still in the oven.


I will have some different shapes I will add as soon as they are finished.

Now....where is the butter?

3. We have been very busy
My sisters came to town for our dad's 78th b'day and the day of the party, which was supposed to be at my house, Mr.sazemisery and I got the flu. We were at home sick until Wednesday just in time to take my sister back to the airport early Thursday morning. I had made the dough last weekend but haven't felt like eating or cooking. I'm spending the day baking, laundry, paperwork from the office that was neglected this week, etc.

The Clear Creek monks sent a lamb sausage sample along with the rack I ordered, so I am going to make tiny meatballs and make a stew with barley and vegetables. Yummy! Dessert has not been decided yet.

Timer is telling me baguettes are ready!:bounce:

5. I got the flu, I think, too, last week.

It was terrible with cold symptoms lingering for two weeks. Ugh! I didn't feel totally better until yesterday. I couldn't taste a thing until then, either. Made it really hard to cook.

Soup sounds really good!

I moved a coupla years ago from the San Francisco Bay area to the mountains of Arizona.

One of the most difficult adjustments has been the lack of REAL bread, especially SOUR DOUGH!

I know Peter Reinhart, the famous bread book author (and warm, wonderful, humorous guy), who lived across the street from my parents. We were the gloriously fortunate 'guinea pigs' to taste everything that came out of his & his wife, Susan's kitchen while he wrote his books.

I have all of his books, but I have three rules: I will not raise and maintain 'starter' as another pet, I will not kneed bread, and I will not whip cream or eggwhites and fold into anything.

So I don't make bread.

I looked up the book you refer to 'Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a Day' (which is out of stock at Amazon for the moment), which lead me to the master recipe by the author, as published in Mother Earth News http://www.motherearthnews.com/Real-Food/Artisan-Bread-In-Five-Minutes-A-Day.aspx

A commenter on the book suggests one needn't use a baking stone, but an unglazed 12" tile from Home Depot will work (I've used one in the oven successfully). Just a few bucks.

I'm plotting to actually make bread!

Peter Reinhart's first book "Sacramental Magic in a Small-town Cafe" (no longer in print, but available) is an absolute treasure to read. It includes his wife Susan's Bread Salad recipe. OHMYGAWD!YUM!!!!! And the best Bar-B-Q sauce anywhere (a whole story in the book about the search). I told my husband I could beat that sauce. I FAILED. Luckily, Peter gave us a gallon each Xmas! The recipe is in that book.

8. We made a bread salad also
They are wonderful. Also try Tomato Bread Pudding. I will post the recipe after my nap.

Wake up!! WAKE UP!

My "Small Town Cafe" book is still packed from moving, but I recall Susan used sliced pepperoncini and kalamata olives & onions & tomatoes of course. She used quite a bit of pepperoncini JUICE in the dressing.

Now I don't have to buy the book.

And I like the idea about using the much cheaper unglazed flooring tiles for cooking. Clever. Though I do have some smaller tiles that my mom bought ages ago. They are the smaller 4x4 tiles and you just lay in as many as you want.

12. The book does look worth having,
but the article posted by the book author has several variations... enough to keep a person entertained while deciding on the book. Some of the commenters about the book at Amazon have some valuable tips and ideas, too.

Is available new from $15.68. What a great price! (I must have gootten the notion that it was out of stock from some of the earlier comments at the site & never looked!)

Peter Reinhart's "Sacramental Magic in a Small Town Cafe" is New & Used from 49 cents (It came out originally years ago)

17. I made this bread for dinner this evening - it was terrific
I like my bread just a tad sweet - so I added a tablespoon and a half of sugar - and a couple of tablespoons of EVOO to give it a bit of flavor. mmmmmmmm

18. I just made a starter batch.. with modifications
I used 100 % whole wheat and I halved the recipe, since I'm a singleton. I'll see how it does.

It's entering its first two-hour resting period. Then I will refridgerate it for the night.
