Aaaarggh! I need an Aebleskiver pan...
by tomorrow. I tried making them by carefully shaping aluminum foil in a muffin pan, but that ended badly. Tasted fine, but couldn't roll the little buggers around to get the right shape without a huge mess.

I saw one in a store months ago, but didn't want to spend the money on it then. Now, not only don't I remember where I saw it, only one person in one specialty store ever heard of it. And she won't have one in stock till next year. (Do NOT suggest a small shop owner might order something odd during Christmas week.)

Lodge sells 'em on the web, and I'm sure other places do too, but I'd rather not pay the 45 bucks with shipping and then get the damn thing in two weeks.

I guess it's just plain ol' boring cupcakes this year.

(I am easily amused and have fun trying to convince people that aebleskiver isn't something obscene.)

1. Can you use one of those seen on tv puff pans?

I've seen them at our local Walgreens and at Bed Bath & Beyond, I think they were $9.99

2. I don't think I've seen those, but...

here's what I need, from Lodge's site:

https://secure.lodgemfg.com/storefront/storeimages/{B45F41FC-C116-4954-AF4C-083CC44ACC79}_P7A3.jpg

The trick is to make cakey batter and turn them around with knitting needles while they're cooking (ok, I'll use bamboo skewers) so they end up as little spheres.

I have a few more places to check before I give up completely. I doubt Wallgreen's will have anything heavy enough to do the job, but I haven't been in BBB, Home Goods, TJ Maxx, or some other places that might "accidentally" have it. It's not the sort of thing most stores want to keep in inventory, unless they have a clientele of Danes or very experimental cooks.

(Or the buyer was drinking that day and thought it was an egg poacher.)

Pancake Puffs are all the rage now so the pans are cheap and are being sold like Chia Pets in our local drug stores

A little more expensive at Target

5. If you have Rite Aid....try there too
The wells in the Pancake Puff pan may be a scootch smaller but it's the same concept. If you have a mall close by check to see if they have a "As Seen on TV Store" that way you can get the Pan and a Sham WoW!

8. Struck out completely...
Nothing at:

Target
T. J. Maxx
Walgreens
Rite-Aid
BJ's
K-Mart
Wal-Mart
Home Goods
Corelle Outlet Store
Gourmet Chef
Cookery Dock

Which are pretty much all the places I go to for cooking gadgets. Went as far as Riverhead, 20 miles down the road, and the next serious shopping is another 30 miles down the road. Lots of "as seen on TV" stuff everywhere, but no Pancake Puffery anywhere. No doubt I will be minding my business buying underwear or fishing lures next month and I'll see a huge display with a dozen of them. Or, I'll have a reason to go up-island and be by the stores with them.

Boring cupcakes it is, then. They'll eat 'em, and at least I didn't promise anyone cake balls this time.

(I did, however, find Green Bags at Target, so I won't have to order them online any more.)

6. If there's a Tuesday Morning in
your area, give them a try too. The store is full of odds and ends.

Good luck and if you find the Aebleskiver pan, please post pics of your creations.

10. Funny you should mention that...
I completely forgot we have a W-S outlet around here, mainly because I hate the place the way most people hate Wal-Mart-- ridiculously priced stuff not nearly as good as they claim and most of which I can get cheaper and/or better somewhere else.

But, I was talking to a pastry chef on Christmas Eve, and she told me W-S has them, so I finally got there this morning.

There was a table filled with the older models at 40% off $34.95. That's still more than the "As seen on TV one" and it's aluminum, not cast iron. At least it's made by Nordic Ware, so it might hold up. And it's thick aluminum-- probably thicker than the TV one.

So, I now have a brand-new aebelskiver pan and will eventually report on the making of aebelskivers.

(As I was walking around with the pan, two women came up to me asking about it. Who knew a pancake pan to be a chick magnet?)

11. that's so cool! I love this forum since I always learn about devices I've never
heard of! Would be interesting to hear how things turned out!

Plus it sounds like a good way for guys to meet women (or vice versa!), if they are so inclined!
