I found me some Meyer lemons
We hardly ever get them in these parts.

What should I make?

1. My sister makes these lemon bars and everyone loves
them.

Also, save the seeds. Let them dry out a bit, then plant them in little pots. They will grow into little trees that you can grow indoors. Eventually they will bear fruit, but I don't expect mine to ever get to that stage. I'm just growing them for the beautiful glossy green leaves and the heavenly fragrance from the blossoms.

2. I didn't think to plant the seeds, thanks
I was thinking of maybe a lemon tart, which is just about the same thing as lemon bars. And maybe something with chicken. I've got six lemons to play with tonight.

3. you could squeeze one over some asparagus
Keep in mind that a Meyer lemon is less tart than a regular one.

5. That probably won't work.
Most specialty citrus (like meyer lemons, for example) are either hybrids, or grown from plants grafted onto different rootstock. The plant you get from the seed will not, oddly enough, produce the kind of fruit you're expecting.

6. Check out this article I found.
http://www.plantea.com/lemon-tree-indoor.htm

I got my instructions/information from Barbara Damrosch's book, The Garden Primer. She said the trees will bear fruit. I've got about 8 small trees, 2 of which I kept in the house this winter, and the rest stayed in an unheated shed. All are doing well, but the 2 I kept indoors are doing better. Hope to have a greenhoue before next winter.

7. I'm not saying it won't produce fruit, I'm saying it's highly unlikely it'll produce a meyer lemon.
It'll produce some type of lemon, but likely not the meyer. If you want to understand the scientific reasons why not, I highly recommend Michael Pollan's Botany of Desire (which is just a great read anyway), and specifically the section on apples--the same type of husbandry is used for citrus trees, so you'll get the same (unpredictable) results if you try to grow apples from seed, too.

8. That book was the first thing I thought of, too.

But I didn't know that also applied to citrus. I'm guessing it's because all fruits are hybridized to one extent or another.

I loved that chapter almost more than the one on pot. That whole book was a real learning experience. I'll never buy another non-organic potato again. I'm now reading The Omnivore's Dilemma. Grocery shopping is something of a more depressing experience with all the reading I've done lately. Can't wait until our own garden comes in.

4. I got a phone call the other day, A survey on citrus
Strangest survey I've ever taken. 10 to 15 minutes about everything citrus.

Good luck on whatever you decide to make with them.
