Maine becomes sixth state to ban gestation and veal crates.

Maine has become the sixth US state to ban certain types of livestock confinement. Governor John Baldacci has signed LD 1021, legislation that prohibits gestation crates and veal crates. The law is effective January 1, 2011,

The law was sponsored by Senator John Nutting (D-Androscoggin County), Senate Chair of the Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee. It passed in committee and in both legislative chambers unanimously.

The Humane Society of the United States applauded the new legislation today.

"It's cruel and inhumane to confine animals in cages barely larger than their own bodies for months on end," said Katie Lisnik, Maine state director of The HSUS.

"We're grateful to Senator Nutting for his humane leadership on this important legislation and hope its enactment sends a message to other states that they should follow suit."

1. Great news!

I have known about how veal was raised since I was 8, and I was not exactly an activist kid. It still shocks me when I meet adults who are active liberals, environmentally educated, etc, and don't know about this. Yes, there is a lot more that is wrong with factory farming, but this is a positive step.

And FWIW, when I had veal (the time I learned where it came from), it was at a nice restaurant and I was not impressed at all. I remember asking my mom why they did that to the little cows when it didn't even make it taste that great?
