Beyond the Valley of the Dhal
I made this stupdendous Post-Punk Kitchen red lentil dhal on Sunday:

I zipped up to an Indian grocery in Simi Valley to pick up all the requisite spices. The rest was simplicity itself.

My roommate, who is not especially veg, cheerfully partook, then chomped down the remaining leftovers last night :- )

1. Speaking of PPK, I made this recipe two days in a row.

First attempt - everything went fine up to adding the soba. Every other type of soba I have doesn't require that you rinse it. Pure buckwheat soba does need to be rinsed, and unfortunately it is not emblazoned on the package in GIANT LETTERS so idiots like me can see it. So the end result was something that had the consistency of thick mud and smelled like someone had dumped Scope in it. flamingyouth was able to gulp down a few spoonfuls. I couldn't even manage that. x(

Second attempt - in place of soba, I substituted fettuccine cooked separately and added to our individual soup bowls. It was quite delicious. The spice mixture is quite nice. When I make it again, I'm going to use orzo or orrichiette. The fettuccine, even when snapped into small links, is hard to grab with a spoon when you're also trying to grab chickpeas.

2. Sounds yummy.
I can't wait for their new cookbook, which comes out at the end of the month. :9
