Women face bias worldwide - UN
Women are discriminated against in almost every country around the world, a UN-commissioned report says.

It says that this is despite the fact that 185 UN member states pledged to outlaw laws favouring men by 2005.

It adds that 70% of the world’s poor are women and they own just 1% of the world’s titled land.

The report, which was prepared for UN Human Right Commissioner Louise Arbour, says rape within marriage has still not been made a crime in 53 nations.

The report was compiled by Fareda Banda, a law professor at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).

"EVERY woman I know has experienced discrimination or abuse" --J K Holtz , Chicago

1. It's still "acceptable" to discriminate against women, sadly. nt

2. Hillary's speech in Bejiing at the UN Conference on Women was brave & Hailed by women worldwide
Yet she is called sexist names, including a 'f*cking whore', candidate for president.

This is reality for women, all women.

7. Having a woman as a presidential candidate has certainly brought front and center...

...the fact that women in this country STILL are not treated fairly, are still subject to gross double-standards, and are harassed, abused, and denied economic, legal, professional, and social justice.

NO WAY would a male candidate EVER be treated the way Hillary has been.

And I'm NOT saying she's be behind because she's a woman - I believe she overcame those particular barriers - all the crap that has been flung at her - but she shouldn't have HAD to - and THAT is the point.

I am not decided yet on my preferred candidate. I'm not adamantly a Clinton or Obama supporter - I guess I'll vote for whoever the nom is but damn, I tell ya the way she has been treated is the epitome of the problem in this country (and worldwide).

Just brought the problem right back front and center. It's DISGUSTING. Nothing's changed.

3. About six years ago, at a family get together, some women
were discussing how far women have come, and that all was well with the world. I say no way, and that the equality issue must be addressed. Ecomomically is the first step.

5. HA! We still got a LOOONG way to go before achieving economic...
...and social justice. And NO country is an exception to the fact that neither exists for women - still.

4. Why am I still shocked
at the awfulness of the comments at the bottom of the BBC article?
