Spanking your kid could hatch a bully

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Punishing your toddler with a few swats on the rear may come back to bite you, a new report suggests.

Health

According to the study, kids who were spanked often were twice as likely as those who weren't spanked to develop aggressive behaviors such as getting into fights, destroying things or being mean to others.

Earlier research had produced similar results, but most had not taken into account how aggressive kids were to begin with, and other factors could have biased the results.

Although the new study doesn't prove that corporal punishment causes aggression by itself, it shows that the link remains even after excluding a broad range of possible explanations.

"That is really a key point that sets the study apart," said Catherine A. Taylor, of Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans, who led the research, published in the journal Pediatrics.

1. I see one around my daughter still hatching...and the parents are angelic.

They wouldn't hit her unless she had something lodged in her throat.

Nature is a powerful thing.

3. It makes empirical sense.
If you teach your kids that they will submit to your demands or you'll "beat" them (I know spankings do not a beating make, but kids can't pick up the nuances, really), they will in turn put that into practice when their peers don't submit to them.

5. Risk raising a bully... or end up with a brat you'd see on "Supernanny".

Tough choice. The study seems to make some sense... but that is a risk I would take.
I'm a big fan of resonable and responsible spanking. Worked for my grnadparents and my parents.
Also, there is a big difference between administering a spanking and beating a child.

11. Are children who get spanked more likely to exhibit aggressive behaviors
Edited on Wed Apr-14-10 02:46 PM by hughee99
or are children who exhibit aggressive behaviors more likely to get spanked?

Not defending spanking here, but it seems likely that a child fighting, destroying things or being mean would be more likely to get spanked.
