(Edinburgh) Cody Lavender, an American exchange student, has fallen to his death from a dormitory room window at the University of Edinburgh.

Police are investigating but say there is nothing to indicate foul play.

Lavender, 20, had been watching television with friends when he suddenly plunged through the window witnesses said.

He was to have returned this week to the US for Christmas.

Watching TV and just suddenly plunged through the window. That sounds very odd.

1. I can't think of any reason to plunge through a window,
if all he was doing was watching TV. There's something screwy with their story.

3. Even if brew were a factor - it's still very odd.
I agree it's screwy.

Tragic story.

2. Poor guy... here's another article on it, with more details
I've drunk in the student union there dozens of times... I suspect strong brew will be a factor here.

A neighbour of the dead man, who declined to give her name, said: "We were all pretty close and it's just too soon to talk about it. It's really upsetting." A first-year student, who asked not to be named, said he emerged from A Block just moments after the fall. The 18-year-old said: "It was pretty horrific. I heard people shouting and four or five of us phoned for an ambulance.

"People were standing in shock, but then some started to hold each other, crying when it was not looking good for the guy. We heard he had a weak pulse and was alive at first.

"This is middle of exams, just before Christmas and the end of the semester. This is a very close community here. There are more than 500 people, but they form quite close-knit families. It's going to shock everyone in halls and the whole of the student union."
