No on Prop 8 leader receives death threats

A South Bay woman who led the local effort against the anti-gay marriage amendment Proposition 8 received anonymous death threats via e-mail the Saturday following the election.

Gloria Nieto, the volunteer political director for San Jose's Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center, reported the electronic harassment to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department last week.

"I had death threats over the weekend from someone named USA USA," Nieto told the Bay Area Reporter last Thursday. "It was because of my work on Prop 8. I didn't even go through all of them. Most had headlines like 'Gloria must die.' One was pretty specific about putting a bullet in my head."

The sheriff's department has classified the threats as a hate crime and has an open investigation under way. Lieutenant Edward Wise, a spokesman for the department, said there is no known suspect in the case and it could take weeks, if not longer, to track down the source of the e-mails.

9. If someone tells me they are "pro-life" I ask them about their feelings on

war, the death penalty, or whatever the "issue du jour" happens to be. I've never once been wrong in correcting them: "You are anti-abortion, not pro-life". Most of them don't get the meaning. I have no trouble correcting these freaks. They hide behind abortion so no one sees how much they love death for others.

It's sick the way the bigots think they can scare us into submission with threats. This is certainly not over. They're not used to us fighting back so they're getting really agitated.

at least the sherriff's department is acknowledging the threats as a hate crime. I read a post in the last few days that I can't find now, but it was a news story of an obvious hate crime, but the local authorities were not identifying it as a hate crime.

Can't remember is it was GLBT- or race-related, but either way, to pretend deeply prejudiced people aren't out roaming the streets looking for targets for their ill-defined, ignorant hatred is just, well, ignorant. :grr:

that the stalker will be investigated... it took nearly two years for anyone to investigate my death threats... it was the FBI, not the police who finally acted. when it goes to trial and after I testify, I will write about it. i wish i could talk about it now and have been wishing for nearly two years...but death threats, serious and actionable death threats have become a part of the norm in these last 8 years.:(
