What irony.

reality for me has sunk in and I am back to my old cynical self about it all while the rest of DU squeals with joy. I guess I will just read and lurk for awhile and not rain on anybody's parade. for now.

3. Sorry that the nit wits in your state aren't as progressive as the MSM
fundies and RW has been saying California was for the last 30 years. Take it with a grain of salt and hope the next 4 years will see change in america. I know this sucks but also remember that many never thought they would ever see a president that wasn't a rich white man, it took america over 50 years to go from desegergation to voting for an afro american as president. I know I never expected to see it in my life time and I am old enough to have lived through the most violent times of the civil rights movement.

5. The MSM that is so sexist?????
Sorry, the MSM is incredibly sexist. 14% - FOURTEEN percent of the opinion pieces in the Wash Post are written by women. That's it.

9. Not just in California. Florida and Arizona as well as all the other states that have already done
this. This is why our civil rights should NOT be left to the states as Obama so often says. Our civil rights should not be left to the majority either, not more than his ancestors' rights should ever have been.

Yeah, it's great to have a black President. I cried last night in happiness. And then I cried again when it was obvious that Prop 8 would pass. He could have done more and I hope he realizes how wrong his stance is.

I don't want to wait until I'm dead to be equal. We shouldn't have to wait 50 more years.

6. Homophobia is rampant in this country,
this is not just rheotric, talk to otherwise normal, moderate people and see the shit that comes out of their mouth.

if such words were applied to any other group peope would be outraged, but, if it's about GLBT's, then, it's OK to dehumanize.

Yep 2 things I noticed also, they are fine until Gays and abortion comes up
then they are foaming at the mouth, gnashing their teeth and say the most stupidist things. I can't believe we have come this far yet so much have remained stuck in the 40's,50's and 60's.

7. That way in Florida
So sad.

I talked to some folks who was confused on what it ment. The way it was worded, etc. Some didn't realize it was going to be on there. So this issue wasn't out there well enough. Not good, cause I'm in blue area.

8. It is sad that we break one barrier while implementing another in several
states - florida, arkansas, arizona, and perhaps california - the same people who celebrate breaking discriminations hold, are they part of putting it into constitution? It is hard to to tell - the votes are almost 2 to 1 in florida - I keep thinking of all the people standing in line with me - the people of color(s) - did they vote in this discrimination? The hispanics? who voted for this hatefilled legislature.

10. I taught for years in an all black high school
(Well - in 11 years I did have one white student). The biggest, most frequently used, put down was some form of "faggot" or "queer," followed closely by the drawing of the swastika on papers turned in to the teacher who had been in a concentration camp.

On one level, I never understood my students' failure to stand in solidarity with others similarly on the outside. On another level, I understood it perfectly - we were all fighting for the same crumbs from the pie we weren't allowed to share. As long as we were fighting each other for crumbs it was easier for the pie holder to keep us from sharing in the pie - and when crumbs were all you had there weren't any to share with anyone else.

I knew with a large minority turnout, passage of Prop 8 was a real possibility - even in California.

15. Well, I'm sitting back now and seeing what happens.
The losses we suffered is mind numbing, all while I was estatic about the Democratic party's gains, and our new president!

In this election year, I started out supporting DK.. then when he dropped, I supported Hillary, then when she lost, I supported Presidential Elect Obama. I've supported the Democratic Party for decades now, with my vote, with phone banking, doing walks, handing out signs, politicing in my neighborhood. I am really happy for our wins! At the same time though, now that we have both houses, and the presidency I expect results. Frankly, after all I've poured in heart and soul into the party, if we get kicked to the wayside and forgotten again over the next 2 years, it will be a cold day in hell before I support the party again.

14. My son and I had a LONG , frank discussion about this last night
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 10:24 AM by mtnester
he travels in some pretty amazing circles among the gay community. Prop 8 is probably the last straw for many in the gay community.

If everyone among the GLBT and all community can openly and within the law be discriminated based upon their sexual preference, with no legal protections in most states for that, or denied the same benefits and advantages that straight people get with no legal recourse, then neither can the heterosexual community expect the same protections based on their sexual preferences. So, if heteros start being evicted from their living spaces because they are straight, or they start getting fired from their jobs for being straight, or being denied services because they are straight, or told they do not get health benefits because they are straight but their gay co-workers get those benefits, then and only then will this thing make SCOTUS, and SCOTUS will have to decide that you cannot discriminate on ANYTHING based on sexual orientation.

He and many among the circles he travels in believe this is the only way they get anything, in their lifetimes, in the way of civil rights based on sexual orientation.

He turned 28 Monday..there is a slim change Prop 8 has enough absentee or provisional or other types of ballots to count to swing this to a No. But, it could also stand as it is, and the fact that it was close, and so,me folks that voted for our new president thought it would be OK in the same breath to vote Yes on Prop 8, is, to he and his friends, the worst slap in the face. This, from a man who refuses to be driven from where he lives to a more gay-friendly town, by people who hate even the THOUGHT of him.
