In 2006, Arizona was the only state to defeat a gay marriage amendment. That initiative included language to deny status to any unmarried couple. This time it has resurfaced as a "marriage-only" amendment and will define marriage as "between one man and one woman". The proponents barely disguise the fact that they want to go after the benefits of ALL unmarried couples once again. A coalition of churches and religious groups (most notably the LDS church - which dispatched hundreds of volunteers from Utah) are promoting it and raising a ton of money. $6.9 million according to today's Arizona Republic. I know that's loose change compared to the kind of money both sides are spending in CA, but that amount goes a loooooong way in a state as small as AZ, with only 2 major media markets. I'm seeing "Yes on 102" ads on TV constantly and signs all over the place. The opposition has only raised a fraction of what the pro-side has.
