Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen is under fire after unleashing a homophobic diatribe against a Chicago Sun-Times reporter just prior to Tuesday night's game.

The attack against reporter Jay Mariotti was caught on tape and occurred in front of about 20 other journalists covering the game.

"What a piece of shit he is, fucking fag,'' Guillen said, referring to Mariotti.

Guillen was set off by an article the reporter had written about Guillen's management skills.

Mariotti is a piece of shit. One only has to watch Around The Horn to figure that out. I think people are worried about how it would impact "the children". Here's something a friend told me, while he was in a fucked up state of mind: People use fag and gay because originally fag and gay didn't mean fag and gay, they meant fag and gay and when people use fag and gay their uses are more in line with the original fag and gay and not the fag and gay fags and gays turned it into.

Confronted after the game by Couch Guillen said that in his native Venezuela, that word is not a reference to a person's sexuality, but to his courage.

He also told Couch that he has gay friends, goes to WNBA games, went to the Madonna concert and plans to attend the Gay Games in Chicago.

That was his explanation. O brother.

After spotting an old friend during batting practice, Guillen jokingly remarked:

"Hey, everybody. This guy's a homosexual. This guy's a child molester."


And, as for the content of Guillen's criticism of Mariotti: for the most part, Mariotti's an idiot. It's not too hard to figure out. But this particular time, he was on his case for sending down a reliever after NOT retaliating (i.e., hitting a batter with a pitch) after he was told to. IMO, Mariotti was actually right (go figure) in this argument.

It's like Don Cherry, and his controversy a while ago. Out of context, his remarks ("the French are wimps") were bad. In context, it was worse.
