Do you think it's time for another March on Washington?
The last march, I believe, was in 2000. Do you think it's time for another one (specifically in context with the fight on same=sex marriage)

What are your thoughts on these marches? Are they effective at mobilization or are they just a waste of time?

1. History is the judge of all situations human.
Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 09:04 AM by HypnoToad
Unfortunately, history is also altered by those in control.

I have nothing to march for. But I understand and appreciate others do, even if there are some in my own community that prefer to laugh and be cruel towards me.

Yet at the same time there are issues that eclipse this 'marriage' issue. None of us should be laughing at each other, which in turn makes it even more difficult for those who want equal rights to convince those they've hurt to stand with them side by side. Besides, in general, I will not support any cause where a sufficient quantity of its members treat me as an inferior or unworthy person. Why scratch a person's back if all they're going to do is stick a knife back in mine?

If the GLBT community wants equal treatment, we need to show we've got the maturity. Universally so; minorities are at greater scrutiny and therefore must work that much harder to convince everybody else or else the stereotypes get reinforced, which does nobody any good.

3. Is this different from gay pride in D.C.?
Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 12:42 PM by idgiehkt
I went in '93. I was supposed to go in '98 but I had car trouble right before I was supposed to leave and couldn't go.

I would really like to go to D.C. again. It's been way too long, although I have been to other pride marches locally. I am really feeling a need to do something like that with all the garbage that has been going on in my life lately.

well, this is interesting:

"Operation Save America" is trying to kill Charlotte Pride-

Charlotte Pride 2006” Close to the Grave!

“Q-notes,” the leading gay and lesbian news source of the Carolinas, uncovers a startling secret – Charlotte Pride 2006 is in trouble. The article below states, “It seems that community support (for Charlotte Pride) has gone down. The presence of Operation Save America, I think, has made it unpleasant for many people.”

“Charlotte Pride,” that horrific abomination where homosexual perversion is paraded in Marshall park in Downtown Charlotte every spring, is in deep trouble. Thank God!

We pray that this year, God will push the radical homosexual agenda all the way into the grave and leave no marker for it! We pray that this will provide a bright ray of hope for all who are dealing with “Gay Pride Parades,” and that city after city will be set free from this lie from the pit of hell. We pray that many lost in the bondage of homosexual lust and sin will be set free by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

How did all of this come about? Gentle Christians have been living out their faith in the streets of Charlotte for the past four years, and bringing King Jesus to the very gates of hell – Charlotte Pride

apparently they are having a pride event in August, which is weird. I haven't been too involved in the last few years...guess I need to get my butt in gear.

4. I was part of the march in 1993 (Damn what a march!)
Edited on Sun Jun-04-06 02:39 PM by William769
I think it had a positive impact. With that said you also have to look at who was President then. With this one (Bush) I think it would just be a waste of time trying to change his mind or Congress's for that matter. But a March in the very near future could bring a positive impact on the General public (which is always a good thing). Hope this makes sense.

6. '93 was magnificient
I wish I had gone in '98, too, had to stay home and watch it on tv. I know there were a million queers there in 93. I remember standing in the park waiting to march and ACT UP was doing a die-in and it took a long time to get started, and it was SO hot. Alot of my friends from NC marched with ACT UP. I look at those days now and in some ways I think they were more innocent, even being right in the midst of the AIDS crisis with all the death. I wish that I had been involved in more stuff outside of the gay community then..honestly I feel like I was spoiled back then. If I knew then what I knew now I'd have paid alot more attention to all aspects of politics instead of only gay issues.

7. I was there in 93, also.

I do think it had a positive impact. And yes...it sure made a difference who was President then. I remember being in the crowd of scores and scores of us as a proclamation was read from the President of the United States. The whole experience was so...amazing.

No, this current President is hopeless. But I do think one in the very near future could be a positive impact. Yes, you made perfect sense.

15. they're effective, but dammit no circuit party until AFTER

the scheduled meetings.

Last time if just one hundred people from each state had visited their senators on these issues we would have had 5000 people talking to their politicians. Imagine a thousand people from each state visiting their politicians.

Instead a few queens in dark sunglasses with bad hangovers got squeezed into a few short minutes, and that, plus the usual media coverage of the circuit party, drag queens twirling beads and men in assless chaps is what made the news.

If we want to be effective, then going there to party should figure way down on the list of reasons to do it.

16. i went in 2000
and would go again - if anything - there is more to march for now than there was then - it would be nice (in a humbling, melancholy way) to see the Quilt again - it has not been displayed in a long time - i think the plan was not to display it again -

17. There's One Tentatively Scheduled For April, 2008
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 02:40 PM by justin899
Robin Tyler (www.dontamend.com) has said something about putting together another march, but I don't know how far along the planning is since nothing has been posted on it since last year.
