Priest separates gays, pedophiles

Just because a priest - or any man - is gay, doesn't mean he is a pedophile. That is an important distinction to make, said the Rev. John Harvey, a moral theologian and director of Courage, an organization that helps homosexuals deepen their spirituality and live chaste lives.

"It would be a terrible, unjust slander against many homosexual priests who live chaste lives ," Harvey said. "We must not equate normal homosexual failures with pedophilia."

Harvey said pedophile priests make up only 1/3 of 1 percent of all priests. While even that percentage is too high, he said, it in no way represents the vast number of clergy, who are neither gay nor pedophiles.

Pedophilia is a deep-rooted disorder that involves people who have grown psychologically beyond the age of those on whom they prey, Harvey said.
