Australian gay couple hit family jackpot
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/more-news/australian-gay-couple-hit-family-jackpot/story-fn7x8me2-1226181926901

The couple, known only as Tony and Brett, revealed their unconventional family to the nation last night after bringing the babies home from India.

The couple told the Nine Network they started the surrogacy process in 2009, flying to Delhi to meet a fertility doctor.

After a number of failed attempts, doctors recommended two women be implanted with four eggs from donors and fertilised with the men's sperm, they told A Current Affair.

The dads said they were shocked when, weeks later, tests revealed both women were pregnant with twins.

3. So many unwanted children and
these dudes think their sperm is priceless. And today marks the 7th million born.

I think it's selfish and oppressive. I hope the women who carried these twins were compensated for the use of their bodies.

So damn sad.

11. Yes...let's have more
and more and more and more and more people on the planet. Elitist....so it's OK if gay men have women reproduce for them, but you don't want anyone else to populate the world.

Wake the f*ck up. Too many people and not enough resources.

And no one's sperm nor eggs are that special. How selfish.

9. I lived in SF during the
Death of the '80's. And NO, I didn't think my eggs were 'special' nor 'priceless.' I did not breed. In the '70's and '80's, I remember straights were called 'Breeders.' Shoe on the other foot now.

How conservative and to the Right this nation has gone. Have a woman give gays babies and move to the suburbs. Rove did his work well....tell someone they can't have/do something and they will do whatever they can to do it.

A Nation Moving To The Right...let's have families, move to burbs, and become Log Cabins.

I will never understand this.

We were once such allies against the Establishment and the straight Corporate :puke: s

Like we need more f*cking people on this planet.

12. You didn't answer dbackjon's question?
"Have a woman give gays babies...?! You think they just "gave" those "fags" babies?! WTF does ROVE have to do with anything?! So, it is OK for heteros to pass along their DNA but not the "homos?" What about "lezzies" that have babies? Have an issue with them too?

7. Maybe so...
...but remember the majority of those 7 million born came from straight couples. In my area (Country town in Victoria Australia) many get pregnant just to get a baby bonus ($$$) from the government. And they are ALL straight.

As for this couple, good on them. And it is a crying shame that they have to seek surrogacy overseas rather than in their own country.

15. I Advocate Adoption Myself
because there are so many unwanted children right here in America who need loving homes. I am assuming that the women have been compensated...if not then these guys are jerks.

16. Reading the OP, it's as
if the women who carried the twins are simply INVISIBLE. Merely ovens to keep the fetuses warm until birth. I assume POOR women are the ones who carry these fetuses to birth. No one thinks of the women.

Please wake me from this patriarchy nightmare.

14. And it may be the situation in this case too...
that was the gist of my response. One would think, however, that there are plenty of adoptable orphans in India and other parts of the world.

8. It all depends...
...on what part of the country they reside in. Some states in Australia do allow adoption for same sex couples, other parts don't.

17. I'm not familiar with the way the legal system works over there.
When my partner and I lived in the US, we'd looked at adopting. Even though there are states that we could always do it legally in, after consulting with 4 different lawyers in 3 different states, we decided the risk wasn't worth it.

There's just too much risk. Even if the state does allow it, there is nothing at all from stopping the original birth parents, or even family members of the birth parents showing up someday on your doorstep with a lawsuit ready to sue for custody. Even in California, Washington state, and Massachusetts (the 3x states we sought council in), the chances of us being able to hold on to our adoptive child's is tenuous at best.

Luckily, we both are very fortunate to have very supporting families, and my partners sister agreed to carry one for us. We ended up using my sperm, and her own ovary through artificial insemination. We now have a wonderful 4 year old daughter who we both have legal custody, and direct genetic ties to that can't be taken away from us.

Now here in Brazil, the laws are different, and we are in the process of adopting this amazing 4 year old boy. He is so sweet, so loving, and so desperately in need of a loving home. He is the son of one of my co-workers wifes sister. She didn't want him, and gave him up to some family members first, then to Rio state, and then my co-workers wife took him in, but with their own children, she was considering giving the boy back to the state. Long story short we are now looking at adopting this great child. The laws protecting gay unions here, and their adoptive rights are very strong, and once the paperwork and filing is complete, this child will be the child of my partner and myself 100% with no rights or powers of the original parents or their families to change their mind later. Of course, if we ever decide to return to the US.. This will be difficult, but the laws in the US will have to change significantly before we ever move back to that backwoods, dark aged, pit of conservative hell. We, and our money will consider moving back to the US the day we can do so as a legally recognized family.. all 4 of us.
