Obama 'still working' on views of gay marriage
<http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jY1Thhe9298eJOL2khkdDc3Idptw?docId=04810be93ca54d98847909edf9ec36d2>

President Barack Obama says he is "still working" on his views of gay marriage.

Obama's comments come one year after he told liberal bloggers that his views on gay marriage were "evolving." He supports civil unions, but has thus far not backed same-sex marriage.

During an interview with ABC News on Monday, Obama said gay couples should, at a minimum, have strong civil unions. But he stopped short of backing gay marriage.

I'm still working on whether I'll vote for his reelection.

3. I predict he'll be 'working' on them until the first post-election strategy sessions
Then he'll finally make a decision whether or not to publicly back marriage equality in his second term. If I had to bet, I'd say he probably will, though he probably wouldn't announce that until later on in that term. And even then, I'm not so sure . . . I'd say it's 55-45 that he comes out in favor before his second term ends.

4. Assuming that Obama will be renominated
I hope he's the last candidate we have to deal with who has anti-marriage viewpoints.

5. I see no indication that he won't be renominated
Whether he'll be re-elected is another story. I think he will, but it's going to be a lot closer than last time.

What he does vis-a-vis this issue will probably be very influential to future positions that Democrats take in public. If he waffles or punts (which I gave a 45 percent chance of), I don't know. If he comes out strongly in favor, maybe it will make its way into the platform.

21. At least on the Dem side, the GOP nominees are all trying to out do each other
on who would re-institute DADT currently - and repealing that has huge support compared to marriage equality

So this will continue to be a political football for several more cycles at least (hell, they still want to repeal Roe v Wade somehow)

15. You are far more optimistic than myself.
I predict that following the election, assuming he is reelected of course, the gay community will once again be shoved back in the closet. Progressive rhetoric is purely for campaigning only, not governing.

16. Had a conversation with a family member about this the other day
That family member has been heavily involved on the funding end of GLBT activism for a long time.

There's nobody I trust more on these things. He said: 'we're not just at the beginning of the end, we're actually at the end of the end.'

I was actually very surprised to hear him say that, because he's never struck me as overly optimistic about this stuff. So I do think that's a good sign. Obama's important, but I can also envisage a scenario where good things happen without him necessarily taking a leading role.

12. ah, yes, I agree with you
Calling for the repeal of DOMA is not the same thing as supporting the right to marriage.

13. He's just a bag of second hand prejudices and religious jargon
The man is laughable on this issue, a satire of a prude trying not to say the vile words he's really thinking.

14. He's definitely not saying what he's really thinking
I think he actually IS in favor of marriage equality, but he's even MORE in favor of political expediency.
