Minn. gov. vetoes gay funeral rights bill
Minnesota’s Tim Pawlenty vetoed a bill over the weekend that would have given gay partners “the right to decide what to do with the body of their loved ones, should they die,” according to the Pioneer Press.
Pawlenty said bill was unnecessary because “partners can draw up a living will,” the Press said. But gay rights advocates pointed out that married couples don’t have to take that step.
The bill would have also allowed gay partners to sue for wrongful death, should their partner be killed.
The Press said that “Pawlenty signed a bill last year that protects jointly owned homes from being sold to cover state medical bills should one partner die. Those protections already existed for married couples.”
