16. I liked Steven Grossman, one of the first openly gay recording artists of the '70s.
Edited on Sat Apr-24-10 08:36 PM by foxfeet
He died, too young, of AIDS. I lost my copy of "Caravan Tonight" when the crackheads down the hall broke into my storage locker and ripped off all my vinyl recordings. I wish them upon themselves. Grossman is sort of folky, with obvious Joni Mitchell influences. Nice melodies, great lyrics. Recommended as a piece of LGBT history if for no other reason.

Edited on Sun Apr-25-10 10:58 AM by superduperfarleft
The singer Antony is trans, although he still seems to identify as male. Several other members are gay, but I don't know about Antony himself. They are really a gorgeous band.

Here they are doing a version of Leonard Cohen's "If It Be Your Will." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MDlMdu2gjw

And here's him performing one of their best songs, "Fistful of Love," live. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CImsEJHYyv4&feature=related

I have said of Andy and Vince that they have provided more reliable and more enduring pleasure than any of my partners. I loved them at first 'sight' and have attended every local concert ever since.

33. I thought the OP was about "out" artists
but then ya'll went off on Morrisey. Who was always pretty coy.
So why not Joe Jackson? (my favorite)
Why not that guy from Husker Du? Bob Mould.
Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys is out.

But I think one of my all time favorite openly gay songwriters is Billy Strayhorn.

41. I can't believe some of the missing names!
Only a couple of people mentioned Elton John.

No one mentioned RuPaul, America's favorite Drag Queen. Your gay cards have officially been revoked! :P

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a0nIxAfPFU">RuPaul - Devil Made Me Do It
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KxZFyoZsBA">RuPaul - Jealous of My Boogie (Featuring Chi-Chi-LaRue)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3RB_56WziA">RuPaul - Cover Girl (Featuring Bebe, Nina, and Rebecca)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyG3MP6FebQ">RuPaul - Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDqPpbqSnAI">RuPaul and Elton John - Don't Go Breaking My Heart

If you're looking for something a little different, how about Matt Alber? He's clearly such an awesome person, with the heart as big as the world, and it comes out in his music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTvJdpkdLiw">Matt Alber - End of the World
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-Vjl46hkIw">Matt Alber - The Slow Club
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLthR4nj1BA">Tightrope

Is Matt Alber a little to mellow for you, but you like the style? How about someone a bit more edgy like Jay Brannan?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNxzFPTA1y4">Jay Brannan – Housewife
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVuhdIK2E7o">Jay Brannan - Soda Shop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AV5XzKjz2Y">Jay Brannan - Can’t Have It All
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7CDT820D7c">Jay Brannan – Half-Boyfriend

Both Matt and Jay write their own songs and thats part of their charm, but aren't exactly mainstream. If you're looking for mainstream - and I can't believe no one mentioned her - how about some LadyGaga? She's openly bisexual, extremely pro-LGBT, and in her music videos she shows she isn't afraid to highlight that she's a bisexual. After all, her famous song Poker Face is about her having sex with a guy while imagining she's with a woman instead.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_de3C3Pkb8Q">Lady Gaga - Poker Face
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mB0tP1I-14">Lady Gaga - Love Game
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrO4YZeyl0I">Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ95z6ywcBY">Lady Gaga - Telephone (Official Explicit Version featuring Beyonce)

I have a soft spot in my heart for artists that market directly to the LGBT community, especially independent artists! Hopefully some of you guys enjoy Jay and Matt, and for shame that no one mentioned RuPaul. :P
