3. Aplus.net
I've been with them for more than ten years. Competitive pricing; their promise of 99.9% uptime really is true; tons of built-in extras for free (from photo hosting to automatic installation of blog software & much more); 24/7/365 (and overall quite competent) support; lots of personal attention when some odd problem comes up (which is seldom); and no outsourcing (servers are in San Diego, corporate HQ recently moved to Kansas). Very reasonable TOS; their only real concern seems to be that you don't do anything illegal.

I don't work for them, or get a kickback for recommending them -- I'm just very happy with them, want others to know about one of the really good ISPs/hosts, and of course I want them to continue to succeed. (And they just keep getting better.)

4. Love your post on marriage being condemned by Christians
because it was a pagan concept & sinful!

http://news.lavenderliberal.com/2009/07/14/when-they-tell-you-marriage-has-been-ordained-by-god-since-the-beginning-of-time/

When They Tell You Marriage Has Been Ordained by God Since the Beginning of Time…

There was no Christian marriage sacrament until the sixteenth century. A Catholic scholar writes that “nothing is more remarkable than the tardiness with which liturgical forms for the marriage ceremony were evolved.” In fact they were not so much evolved as copied from the common law long established under paganism, and had more to do with the sharing of property than the sharing of love.

<...>

Early churches, both Gnostic and orthodox, had many leaders advocating rigid asceticism, claiming that men could be saved, or could attain true spirituality, only through total avoidance of contact with women.

<...>

The orthodox church reasoned that man fell from grace through woman, therefore man could return to grace only by renouncing woman. Once St. Augustine had labeled sexuality as the pipeline of original sin, and marriage as a moral crime, the old pagan respect for the institution of marriage was on its way out.

<...>

St. Ambrose called marriage a crime against God, because God had intended every person to maintain the state of virginity that came with birth. St. Jerome said the primary purpose of any man of God was to “cut down with the ax of Virginity the wood of Marriage.” Tertullian called marriage “an obscenity” and a moral crime “more dreadful than any punishment or any death.” There were churches in Syria that accepted only celibate men, and refused to baptize any man who had ever been married. In 251, Bishop Cyprian of Carthage praised the currently spreading plague because it allowed Christian youths to die while still in a state of virginity. The Council of Trent ruled that a person who even hinted that marriage might be more blessed than celibacy was a heretic and must be declared anathema — that is, formally cursed and excommunicated.

— Barbara G. Walker “Heresy”

And the bit about babies being "the offspring of Hell" - per Pope Gregory the Great; great Christian family values there!

5. Its not just web hosting that does this in Utah
Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 07:29 PM by FreeState
When I was in college halfway through the year my landlord in an apartment building wanted everyone to sign a new lease for the remainder of the year. I refused because it stated the following two things (and no Im not making this up):

1) I will take no part in immoral activities on the property.
2) I will not cook foods that are offensive.

I called the landlord's leasing company who told me the property owner wanted the new leases. They could not tell me what I "immoral activities" were - that was up to the property owner they said. Could I get a list? Nope.

The offensive food clause was put in place according to them because some of the American students could not stand using a shared kitchen with international students who prepared sushi among other foods that smelled different than western foods. Also like the previous case they could not provide me a list - that was at the property owners discretion.

7. Rather typical of them
They make stuff up as they go and always want to have the right to move the goalposts while making you the offending party.

8. Bluehost screwed me over, too, for my anti-Prop 8 pics I posted to my site
Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 08:41 PM by keepCAblue
there was no profanity, no violence suggested--nothing that violated their TOS--just "Vote No on Prop 8" type graphics I'd created for others to download from my site. So Butthosts couldn't legally suspend my account. Instead, they did something really slimy, which I posted about here on DU back in November 2008:

*********************************

Please add to {the Mormon boycott} list:

JetBlue
Marriott Hotels
Bluehost.com web hosting service (located in UT) - these a$$holes suspended my website after I posted pics that were against prop 8. I uploaded my pics late Friday and on Monday morning they suspended my account for TOS violation, claiming my site had been hacked and used for phishing. The "suspect" files had all been added the day after I posted my prop 8 photos, so I think the timing of the hacking was mighty suspicious. Upon research I found a number of Internet references of Bluehost using their Mormon-based values as an excuse to censor peoples web content. Boycott these bigots, please. If you have a Bluehost account, CANCEL it and then let them know why.

JetBlue, Marriott and Bluehost are Mormon-owned business. (Marriott's owners were big contributors to the Yes on 8 campaign)

Here is another list from dailykos of Mormon-owned business:

Boycott list:

1. All Marriotts

2. Manchester Grand Hyatt, San Diego, CA

3. Grand del Mar Resort, San Diego, CA

4. Whitetail Club and Resort, McCall, Idaho

5. Franklin Templeton Investments

6. Prince Group

7. Blackwater (military subcontractors - OK I know it's hard for an average consumer to boycott this one!)

8. The Polynesian Cultural Center, Honolulu, Hawaii

Here is a clue about which businesses are Mormon owned: Biz names with "Blue" in them (i.e., JetBlue, Bluehost.com) - the "Blue" refers to "true-blue Mormons" (aka "TBM", as opposed to Jack Mormons. Here is a wiki description:

There are two types of Mormons - the hard core Mormons are generally referred to as "True Blue Mormons". If you are raised Mormon, attend the secret Temple ceremonies, give 15% of your income, go on a mission as a teen, and hold a "Temple Card" (without which you cannot enter the Temple), you are a True Blue Mormon. If, for whatever reason, you no longer believe and want to leave the church, you would be ostracized by all in the church, and even disowned by your family. You may even have to file suit to have your name removed from their rolls (part of the reason they are so large is because they only add people to the rolls, they don't remove unless forced to).

The second type of Mormon is a Jack Mormon. They go to church meetings on Sunday, and may do a little socializing and work for the church, but they do not have their temple card, weren't married in the temple, and have no desire to get one.

9. I use Bluehost
for several sites. I've bookmarked this post so I can refer to the incident when I cancel my account with them. They need to understand that their actions are unacceptable.

I've been boycotting Walmart since 2004 and would love it if I could do the same with every business that is not progressive. But it's not always all that easy - to find out who is progressive - or to find an alternate business with comparable services/products. When I can, though, I do.

10. Well, shit.
I have a website hosted with these people. I had no idea. In fact it was a transgendered person who recommended them to me! Moving is not going to be easy, but I will do so ASAP.

12. And this surprises you, why???
Isn't this typical "action/reactions" from the religious right wing idiots all over the world?

If it is queer related it has to be bad, right? ;)
