NY State Senate: "Will Duane Go GOP?"
From CityHallNews.com

"Among the myriad questions that have circulated in the aftermath of the Senate leadership coup, one has perplexed even the most senior Democrats more than any other: Where is Tom Duane?

On Monday afternoon, he did not attend the press conference in support of Democratic leader Malcolm Smith. On Tuesday, he did not show up at an urgent Democratic strategy session.

Colleagues reported the absence of his car in the Capitol parking lot. Close friends and advisers failed to reach him at his home or on his cell phone.

The mystery of Duane’s whereabouts has sparked a whirlwind of rumors. One theory has him in a tight huddle, brokering the effort to figure out who will be Malcolm Smith’s replacement as Democratic leader—something of a sequel to the role he played in securing Smith’s spot in the first place late last year.

But the scuttlebutt among several lawmakers and aides, which many of Duane's colleagues and supporters seem to believe, is that he is hashing out a deal with the Senate Republicans to bring a bill legalizing same-sex marriage to the floor for a vote."

Whatever it takes, Tom. Get this done!

1. Wow, maybe there is still hope for us with this current NY state senate
Just wow, the national GOP would certainly never try anything like this, but New England GOPers have shown themselves to be more liberal on the gay marriage issue lately, as are the people they represent. Polls in New York even showed recently that Paterson's push to legalize gay marriage was helping his numbers more than hurting them.

2. The state GOP continues to be overwhelmingly against marriage ...
....equality. ( See the assembly vote.)

I think the idea here is that Duane may be able to fashion some kind of deal which will allow the few GOP votes to be pealed away; i.e. the votes sufficient for passage.

It's quite a dilemma. The DEM turncoats are either under indictment for something or about to be. Duane should be mindful of the adage: "Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas."

I'm sure he IS , BTW.
