Top Gun actress Kelly McGillis has confirmed Hollywood’s worst kept secret - she is a lesbian.

The 51-year-old, who played Tom Cruise’s love interest in the film about a fighter pilot training school, has long been the subject of rumours but always denied being gay.

The actress, who is single, 'came out' in an interview with lesbian website SheWired.com.

When asked if she was looking for a man or woman, she said her next partner would 'definitely be a woman'.

She added: 'I’m done with the man thing. I did that, I need to move on in life.

'It’s a part of being true to yourself. That’s been a challenge for me.'

Kelly has been married and divorced twice.

She has two daughters, Kelsey, 19, and Sonora, 16, from her 13-year marriage to California millionaire Fred Tillian. They split in 2002.

Getting hit on by non-repulsive women apparently made me gay. I can't even judge them as attractive or not--all I can say is that they bathed regularly, had nice smiles and personalities, and were far, far more intelligent than most people who think that being gay is a choice or entirely caused by the environment.

There was a great special on the BBC (before the one with Captain Jack) on what biological factors there are and the fact that biological factor != (necessarily) simple genetic factors--like when the fertilized egg implants in the thingy. (Sorry, I'm really bad at biology--especially female biology, so I forget technical terminology which someone will take as knowing nothing. I've been over this with my father--mechanical disinclination mostly means that working on cars bores the snot out of me, not that I can't do it.)
