Protesting Rick Warren in Atlanta 1/19 @ Ebenezer Baptist
Edited on Sat Jan-10-09 11:54 AM by Adamocrat
Check out GLBTATL.org for info.

We STILL Have a Dream - EQUALITY!

What: On January 19, 2009, the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, GLBT|ATL will be protesting The King Center's choice of anti-gay Rick Warren as keynote speaker at the Annual Commemorative Service for Dr. King.

When and Where: The protest will be at the corner of Auburn Ave and Jackson St, the front entrance of Ebenezer Baptist Church, starting at 9:00 a.m. Staging and coordination will begin a half hour earlier, 8:30 a.m., one block south at Edgewood Ave and Jackson St.

End Time: There is no official end time, but the protest will gradually stop through the late morning hours to allow folks to attend the downtown March & Rally at 1:00 p.m. (GLBT|ATL will be there too, assembling at the corner of Peachtree St and Ellis St. You're welcome to join us!)

Our Message: Note that we are NOT protesting Ebenezer Baptist Church. The church is the host of the Annual Commemorative Service, but they do not have a voice in how the speakers at the Service are chosen. We are protesting The King Center for inviting Rick Warren to take center stage during a commemoration of tolerance and unity. We are also protesting Rick Warren's own messages of intolerance and hate. (If you plan on bringing your own signs, keep points these in mind. Most importantly, keep it peaceful, in the tone of Dr. King's legacy of nonviolent protest.)

Getting There: Some streets will be closed, and parking in the area will be scarce to none. We don't have the official street closing information yet. Once we receive that information, we'll post again with information on how to get to the protest.

What to Wear: We will be wearing black shirts as a unifying color, but you are free to dress as you like.

How to Reach Us: Before the event, please e-mail us at [email protected]. On January 19, if you have trouble finding your way to the event or need other assistance or information, you can reach us by telephone at 888-GLBT-ATL (888-452-8285).

2. Please keep kicked until 1/19
And PLEASE... Come one, come all. Gay, Lesbian, Transgendered, Drag Queen, Bisexual, Questioning, Straight-and-Friendly, just plain Queer, and anyone who wants to stand up to BIGOTS like RICK WARREN desecrating Martin Luther King Jr.'s pulpit. Don't let a BIGOT disguised as a moderate hijack THE DREAM.

Also, please help get the word out. The APD has placed our protest RIGHT IN FRONT of the church. We're not protesting the church, Dr. King, or anything other than Rick Warren. Neighboring states folks are also welcome! Bring friends! Bring family! Headlock random strangers on the street and bring them. (Just a joke.)

We're putting leaflets out wherever we can, and fly-posting wherever we can.

If you have an Atlanta-based business and would host a sign and/or leaflets, please let us know. We'll deliver! We're open to any other method of getting the word out.

3. C'mon Atlanta!
If you know anyone in Atlanta, please spread the word. If you have contacts in the Atlanta media, please spread the word. I know that DU is having a LGBTQI crisis right now, but this is a critical moment.

Rick Warren CANNOT be allowed to defile and desecrate the pulpit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Discussion is welcomed... but please keep this kicked until 1/19. This has nothing to do with Obama. It has nothing to do with the church. This only has to do with Rick Warren befouling Dr. King's very own pulpit, if not The Dream itself.

8. is anyone on DU going?
I live in Old 4th Ward, less than 5 minutes from the King Center. I've never been to a GLBT protest and wouldn't be sure what to say or put on a sign but I want to go since I was planning to go to the rally anyways.

10. We'll have plenty of signs there...
Like this (without the protest Warren text):

and quite a few others. We're working with Atlanta's Black LGBT Coalition to have ready-to-print signs, and we'll have a lot of pre-printed signs.

Despite what they're saying in "Latest", we plan a peaceful protest in the spirit of Dr. King's Dream.

I haven't been around in a while (medical reasons) but people are really more aggressive than they used to be. What happened?

17. Two-minutes...
Two minutes on Dr. King's pulpit is two too many. I could probably do a lot of damage to your home in two minutes. :)

19. More than 2 minutes...
After speaking to Atlanta's LGBT Coalition last night, it's clear that he has Dr. King's pulpit for an uninterrupted time frame.
