Showdown on K Street
Edited on Fri May-14-10 06:59 PM by proud2BlibKansan
On Monday, May 17, thousands of Americans—including AFT members—will take on Wall Street and other deep-pocketed corporate special interest groups at a rally that will be held on Washington, D.C.'s K Street, the corridor for corporate lobbyists.

Join us in person or online!

The Showdown on K Street rally is designed to take the fight for financial reform and good jobs to the front steps of lobbyists whose clients include all the big Wall Street banks.

Among the scheduled speakers is Joel Hirschey, an AFT member and junior high school teacher in Syracuse, N.Y., who was recently laid off. The rally will highlight the AFT's Pink Hearts, Not Pink Slips" campaign, which calls for federal funding through legislation that has been introduced in Congress to save the jobs of Hirschey and thousands of his fellow educators around the country.

"The economic mess that was concocted on Wall Street is playing out in our public schools—with devastating effects for students and as many as 300,000 educators facing layoffs," says AFT president Randi Weingarten. "Wall Street gladly took its bailout and went back to business as usual—while working men and woman are still bearing the brunt of their mess. Main Street deserves better."

If you can't attend in person, you can still watch the rally live on the AFT's website. The live online event—set to begin at 11:45 a.m. Eastern time—will allow viewers to join in the discussion and submit their comments.

In unity,
The AFT
