Gov. Crist vetoes SB 6
Good that somebody cares about public education and possibly his own future political ambitions:

Gov. Charlie Crist has vetoed merit-pay for teachers legislation. Crist said at a noon news conference today that it is "contrary to the best interests of the people of Florida."

The governor said he vetoed the legislation, in part, "because of the process by which it passed. This … sped through committees without meaningful imput" from teachers, parents and administrators.

"Sometimes stated goals do not match the words of the bill," Crist said. "I find the content of Senate Bill 6 and the manner of its adoption significantly flawed."

The bill would require school districts develop teacher evaluations that rely mostly on how students perform on standardized tests. Districts would be prohibited from basing teacher pay on advanced degrees or years served. New teachers would be hired under probationary contracts that would allow termination without cause for the first years of service.

1. This bill is a TERRIBLE idea.
Who would want to go into teaching? My ex was a teacher and he proudly taught in low income schools with lower-than-average test scores. They had a great staff and had higher test scores than most schools with comparable income levels, but nonetheless, could not compete with those in more affluent areas. The policies represented by this bill would just exacerbate that distinction based on income as teachers jockey for positions in rich areas. Meanwhile, there's no incentive for teachers to improve their own education.

2. This is a victory, but the privatizers will continue with their campaign
to destroy public education in order to limit upward mobility for the masses by cutting off education above middle school level.

The World Bank is pushing this, and that's why you have people like Obama peddling this rot.

5. I will be voting for my first Republican if Crist does not go Independent.
We were told that Jeb and Thrasher are planning on OVERRIDING the Governor's veto.

11. My union rep said that the enemy is sleeping in shifts. Jeb and Thrasher
already said they would try to overrule the veto. Of course, they no longer are operating undercover. The people have been alerted to their scheme, and their last vote was done at 3 in the morning. I have already emailed every representative in my district to let them know how we expect them to vote on any override of our wishes.

8. Well that's a spot of welcome news
 I would still like to know who was behind this proposal in the first place. I think there are going to be more fights in other states.

9. Yep. One state abolishes teacher protections, ALL of them will.

The World Bank and its supporters need to have the bank's "project" come to fruition in this country.

10. Arizona is trying to do it.
SB1040 - This bill requires the State Board of Education to establish and maintain a model framework for a teacher and principal evaluation instrument that uses quantitative data on student academic progress for 50 percent of the evaluation outcomes. This bill passed out House Education Committee on Monday. AEA is opposed to SB1040.
