Obama gave up abortion in D.C. to balance the budget!

A caller was talking about it today on Thom Hartmann. I heard it on the way home. I love my XM. Bill Press on the way to work.

9. The bargaining chip here is the District
And until we end our colonial status, crap like this will keep happening (it's happened on gun control, marriage equality, even street names)

12. Well, as far as that goes, good
I didn't notice any lack of guns in DC before Heller; it was a stupid law and I'm glad it was overturned.

13. The merits of the law are not the topic here, Obama's duplicitous approach is. nt

14. What "duplicitous approach"?!?!
There was a Supreme Court decision. He had literally nothing to do with this.

15. We're talking about his opinion and how his op changed. Not the law itself. nt

16. He said in the run-up to Heller that as much as he dislikes it...
...as he reads the 2nd amendment it guarantees an individual right. I don't know if he lectured differently at Chicago, but I'm not aware that he's said different things while campaigning. He's been pretty mum about gun control.

5. Yeah, but look what the Republicans gave up!!
They didn't get to completely decimate medicare and destroy the entire safety net.

So you know, they gave up something, we gave up something. That's the way it works in Bipartisan Middle Land.

6. explain to me how the federal government can BAN taxpayer money
that is collected from the dc area and used for this purpose. it isn't federal money!! they should be able to use their own tax money for what they want!!

8. Because DC is under direct federal jurisdiction

It's a thing called the Constitution:

(Congress shall have the power...)

To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States

10. Because the Constitution gave Congress that power
We have a Home Rule act but Congress can (and does) override it at will.
