Vick going to the Patriots??
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/06/12/vick-to-pats-theory-gaining-momentum/

There’s been a theory making the rounds in the media that the New England Patriots could be a perfect destination for former Falcons quarterback Mike Vick.

Previously, we’d brushed off such speculation, since we believe (and we’ve been told) that Vick will be looking for a place where he can compete for the starting quarterback job.

In New England, that wouldn’t be happening — barring another Tom Brady ACL eruption.

But we’re now hearing that there could be something to the chatter, primarily since it’s appearing more and more likely that Vick won’t have many/any options to compete for the every-down quarterback job in 2009.

Under those circumstances, sending Vick to New England for a year could help Vick position himself to become an attractive candidate for another team in 2010.

Of course, this would require coach Bill Belichick to be willing to sign Vick to a one-year deal only. If Belichick goes out on a limb for the man who previously hanged a dog or two from one, the Patriots likely will want to have the option to keep him beyond 2009.

Vick, on the other hand, presumably would like to parlay a stint with the Pats into something bigger and better, as soon as possible.

So if the Pats insist on something more than a one-year contract, Vick likely will look to a team where, come 2010, he would have a crack at unseating the incumbent. The Rams, who reportedly are interested in Vick, might give him the best chance in this regard, since current starter Marc Bulger predates both G.M. Billy Devaney and head coach Steve Spagnuolo.

..snip

Interesting thought.

1. If this is true, then I'm done as a Patriots fan.
I really don't need to hear any "he's paid his debt to society" crap, either. As far as I'm concerned, the guy is a psychopath. Dog fighting is an abomination pursued by sick, twisted fucks. Some of these guys were stealing people's pets from neighborhoods and training them to kill each other. Fuck 'em all.

2. I would say that a move like that will be the beginning of the end
for the Belechik era.... The guy's success is not only bringing in quality athletes---but quality men.

6. Actually, the beginning of the end for the Belichick era...
...was when he got caught cheating.

7. I don't believe it.
Why would the Pats want Vick?

He doesn't fit their offense. When Vick was playing, he was never a very accurate passer and not well known for distributing the ball. He didn't have a reputation for read defenses very well, either. The Pats would have to put in a completely different offense for him, and Belichick isn't going to put in a second offensive system for an almost 30 year old back-up QB on a 1 year contract. If all goes well, he'd play as much as Cassel did when Brady was healthy, which is almost never. I don't think Bob Kraft would think it worth the PR hell just to have him on the bench. The only way Vick would make any sense if they were planning to convert him to another position, but on a 1 year contract, is it even worth it?

Why would Vick want to play for the Pats?

How can he parlay a stint with the Pats if he never sees the field, or is in an offense that is completely not his style? He'd do better to take a backup job with a team that has a weak starter. Even if he's not given a chance to compete for the number 1 spot in training camp, by week 8, a team may have had enough of their current guy, and give him some significant playing time.

Is there any evidence that the Pats are pursuing this, other than just "a theory making it's rounds in the media"? I didn't see any from the article.

At least I hope it's not true. I'm not a football fan (except in the playoffs. I know. I know.) But this seems absolutely ridiculous.

14. Meanwhile, the Jets, Bucs, and Bears are allegedly interested in Plaxico Burress
If he can work his gun charges punishment--not to mention the hole in his leg--around the coming football season.

He has a court date tomorrow, but it's expected to result in another adjournment.

15. I doubt it. The Pats prefer players who run plays that are in the actual playbook.
Not players who rely on broken plays.

16. If Vick were to go to the Pats, it would not be as a QB. Maybe as a third backup,
but more likely as a running back, or something that would give him some playing time, and he would probably come pretty cheap.
