Curt Schilling of Red Sox announces retirement
Associated Press, 03.23.09, 10:49 AM EDT

Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling says he's retiring from baseball.

The 42-year-old right-hander who won World Series championships with Arizona and Boston announced on his blog Monday that he's leaving after 23 years with "zero regrets."

Schilling missed all of last season with a shoulder injury. He had surgery last June and had said he might come back in the middle of this season. He made no reference to his injury on his blog, saying only he was very grateful.

Political advocacy
Schilling campaigned for President George W. Bush in 2004, while certain members of the ownership of the Red Sox campaigned for the challenger, Senator John F. Kerry (D). Schilling was encouraged to run for Kerry's seat in the U.S. Senate in 2008 as a Republican, according to the Boston Herald. However, Schilling was quoted in The Boston Globe as saying that he intended to pitch in 2008, which would preclude a Senate run.
He was called to Capitol Hill to testify about steroid use in March 2005, not as a suspected user but rather as a vocal opponent. He has claimed that José Canseco's "statistics should be erased" and that unless he can refute allegations that he used performance-enhancing drugs, Roger Clemens should be stripped of the four Cy Young Awards he has won since 1997.

On January 29, 2007, Schilling announced in an interview that he will support Sen. John McCain (R) in the 2008 presidential election. He further criticized Sen. Hillary Clinton (D) for her comments criticizing the war in Iraq. Schilling has also turned up on the campaign trail several times stumping for McCain.

16. Nah, it's like Homelanders saying George AWOL Bush was not a real republicon
Turns out now, in retrospect, that Dickie 'Five Military Deferments' Cheney is a more fulsome republicon chickenhawk than George AWOL Bush. They just don't want to own their own shit. Go figure.

Hey Kama'aina.

Do you know if you buy the season access online, if it's possible to watch the games on tv rather than on the computer screen?

One thing about living here, no Red Sox games dammit!

22. I feel your pain.
One of the weirdest experiences of my life was nervously refreshing the Yahoo! screen every few minutes one October afternoon in '04, to see if the score was holding up -- then, thanks to the time difference, returning home just in time to see people wearing red uniforms spraying champagne all over each other! (Wonder if it was 86-year-old champagne.)

Schilling did a good job. Too bad he's politically challenged.

Also, Yankees suck.
