IOC president Rogge, rips Usain Bolt, overlooks criticizing China
Rogge rips the wrong guy
By Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports
11 hours, 50 minutes ago
BEIJING — Jacques Rogge is so bought, so compromised, the president of the IOC doesn’t have the courage to criticize China for telling a decade of lies to land itself these Olympic Games.

All the promises made to get these Games — on Tibet, Darfur, pollution, worker safety, freedom of expression, dissident rights — turned out to be phony, perhaps as phony as the Chinese gymnasts’ birthdates Rogge was way too slow to investigate.

One of the most powerful men in sports turned the world away from his complicity. Instead, he has flexed his muscles by unloading on a powerless sprinter from a small island nation.

Rogge’s ripping of Usain Bolt’s supposed showboating in two of the most electrifying gold-medal performances of these Games has to be one of the most ill-timed and gutless acts in the modern history of the Olympics.

“That’s not the way we perceive being a champion,” Rogge said of the Jamaican sprinter. “I have no problem with him doing a show. I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters.”

1. Stupid..
it seems to me that the Jamaican Olympic or Track organizations would be the ones to talk to Bolt, if they thought it was necessary (which I'm not suggesting it is.) It's not a top-of-the-heap issue.

They have since (as of a few hours ago) asked the IGF to investigate the Chinese age issue: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/22/sports/olympics/22age.html?hp

But since the IGF apparently has already said that the girls' ages were correct, I doubt that will go anywhere.

3. Bolt can rock the fuck on. If people don't like it, they can outrun him to shut him up.

4. hell yeah and honestly all the other competitors
seem to like him. Especially Wallace Spearmon. It's only the people watching that seem to have a problem with it. I haven't heard any other competitor say they felt disrespected. The criticism is a little weird. Ato Boldin says he just would have liked to see him run through the tape in the 100, and he quibbled a little about him celebrating too soon, but didn't make a big deal about it. And Ato is a former competitor, so if he thinks it wasn't all that bad, I'd tend to go with his assessment over somebody like Rogge.

7. Costas was ripping him also after the 100. Jeesh! Maybe Bolt should change
his name to Phelps and jump into a pool. Rock on Bolt. You are the best.

11. I found his celebration endearing
It didn't strike me as showboating, but rather a genuine and exuberant reaction to a huge moment in his life. That was pretty clear from his post race interview, when he said he wasn't even thinking about the world record, he was just so excited to have one gold.

13. I'm not feeling all warm and fuzzy towards China after these Olympics...
...lip-syncing seven-year-olds, fake fireworks, female fetus gymnasts...overall, the nationalist fervor by teh Chinese was sickening. Sure, we Americans go oevrboard also, but that doesn't lessen what they did.

15. My favorite part of the interview was when Rogge answered the question
about China not reforming. Since it was never "promised" that China would reform, it's no big deal.

Bullshit. One of the major reasons for putting the Games in China was to force them to reform. They thumbed their noses at the whole world because they know no one can do jack about it. The 21st Century is their century, and they know it.
