USA! USA! USA!

The world record was totally and completely ANNIHILATED!!!

---------------------------------
---------------------------------
BEIJING -- Michael Phelps' historic quest for eight gold medals at a single Olympics continued Monday morning -- but by the thinnest of margins.

Jason Lezak charged home in the anchor leg of the 4x100m freestyle relay to outtouch Alain Bernard of France.

Lezak swam a 46.0 anchor, the fastest in history.

Phelps swam a strong opening leg, putting the Americans in second behind Australia. Phelps broke the American record in the 100m free with his opening leg.

WOOT!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

2. I was sceaming at the end...
then it occurred to me that it was 11:30 PM EST and that my windows were wide open! LOL. The NY Times even had it as a wide column breaking news event before they posted the article.

Lezek was astonishing.

And, I must admit to disliking 'trash talkers': not finding themselves up to the task is just what they deserved. It always astonishing me when participants in relatively short events forget how motivating such bs can be! (And as to talking heads who treat things as a done deal, before they even happen, it's always good to hear them eat crow.)

Congrats to Messrs Phelps, Jones, Weber-Gale and Lezak. They deserve their place in sporting history. Long may their records stand. The smiles on their faces during the medal ceremony was worth staying up for!

3. I just watched it
Awesome. I was going nuts. I was going nuts watching that race before, when Katie Hoff almost pulled out a gold. I freaking love the Olympics!

6. I felt sick for Katie Hoff
Nearly a full body length lead at one point but you could sense it might not be enough.

The finishes of those swimming races are like head bobs in horse racing, seemingly so random. I hate it when they glide the last stroke.

5. You've gotta be pretty stupid if you don't love the Olympics
That's all I was thinking about as I watched that relay. The posters who start those threads in the Lounge might as well have a pitchfork up their ass. They've got no clue.

Thank god I taped the relay. Surreal.

Only problem is I have to avoid DU and other sites until late at night. I'm in the West and we get everything delayed.

7. same here
I had this race kind of ruined because I saw on msn that Phelps went two for two, however I didn't know exactly what they were talking about because I looked away fast, and I thought it could have meant individual races.

I grew up loving sports. My family consists of athletes on both sides. Had an uncle drafted in the NBA, I've competed internationally in sports. I couldn't imagine not loving the Olympics.

8. I've got to give some of the websites credit
Edited on Mon Aug-11-08 02:12 AM by Awsi Dooger
The splash pages of AOL and a few other major sites have been avoiding the results. They'll give a link if you want to find out but the headline doesn't ruin it. It's been a major change from past Olympiads.

I've figured out a strategy to dodge the results. Specialized websites are fixated on their area, so I've been going to a couple of golf websites and a Miami Dolphin website during the 3 hour gap when the East gets the primetime coverage. eBay isn't bad either. I'll probably buy some stuff I don't want or need, just to occupy time.:)

Too bad Ian Thorpe didn't stick around for one more Olympiad. He's not yet 26. But I think he sensed he would be slightly past peak while Phelps is at his apex.

Everyone is watching at the same time regardless of time-zone.

19. They gave the results before a race that was aired LIVE?
That's impossible unless the IOC has a time machine.

Edited on Mon Aug-11-08 04:58 PM by Wetzelbill
about an hour before I watched the race on tv. Now why would I lie about that? And also, this thread here, it was up before I even watched the race. The race was barely over and I clicked on this forum.

As I said though, I came straight to this forum seconds after I watched the race, and this thread had been up for two hours, so no, they don't show it live for everybody, just the East Coast.

28. Wow, that sucks. Thanks a lot NBC.
Although that article is saying I didn't see it live in MST, but I did. Maybe it's because I have Dish?

They should obviously not use a "LIVE" label if it isn't really live.

11. I'm with you. I have a love/hate for the Olympics. This relay was certainly a great race but,
it now gives the networks more and more Phelps. I get it already. Phelps is a great and unusual athlete. You don't have to keep pounding it in my head. And I'm not stupid for thinking that or that beach volleyball isn't nothing but a T & A show. The men's teams wear shirts and the females wear the skimpiest suits ever. And tell me the cameras weren't just about crawling down Walsh's top? mIt is so obvious what sells and sometimes it ain't the games or sport of it. And I'm not stupid about that either.

If it's an actual sport, put some clothes on.

20. So I guess all the female athletes should wear burquas so we don't see any skin?
If you watch the other sports you'll see lots of tight uniforms that show off the male and female body. Hint: that's the point of Olympic level athletics, peak fitness.

Beach volleyball is a real sport and bikinis are worn because it's played on the hot sand. Not to mention, in the original Games the athletes were NAKED! Horrors! :eyes:

Of course not.

A singlet and shorts like runners wear would be fine. A bikini doesn't belong. It's just sensationalism.

23. It's BEACH volleyball. Women wear bikinis at the beach, and men wear shorts.
It's been that way since at least the 60's. Making the women change uniforms just because some people can't handle skin is just nuts.

30. Have you ever been to a beach? The baggy bathing suit is a thing
of some American beaches. Guys in other countries wear what is affectionatley called peka checka's. So how do you explain the guys wearing tee shirts when most wear nothing? This is sooooooooooo obvious, I can't believe you can't see it. Oh, the one-piece suit is still quite a thing at the beach...and it's the 21st century. But I'm glad you likea little skin on the women.

I think their athletic ability would be better recognized if the "T&A" (not my term - see up thread) aspect wasn't there.

How can anyone not get into a feat like that? He was down by a full body length and came back on the last lap to eke out a victory. Amazing! I didn't even see it until this morning and am in awe. Wow!
