(Marion) Jones's team-mates lose medals
The International Olympic Committee has formally stripped Marion Jones's relay team-mates of their medals from the Sydney Olympics eight years ago.

Jones won 4x100m bronze and 4x400m gold in 2000 but had already lost her individual medals after admitting she took steroids before the Games.

IOC legal adviser Francois Carrard says the US Olympic Committee has been ordered to return the medals.

But her team-mates may take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The sprint relay team included Jearl-Miles Clark, Monique Hennagan, LaTasha Colander-Richardson and Andrea Anderson.

The 400-relay squad comprised Jones, Chryste Gaines, Torri Edwards, Nanceen Perry and Passion Richardson.

The athletes had previously argued that it would be unfair to punish them for Jones's violations.

I think this is the saddest part of the whole thing. Not only did Jones jeopardize her own medals but she screwed up the whole team.

1. Steroids are everywhere
I read that 19 NY cops were found to be using steroids. Now the NYPD will begin to test for steroids on a regular basis.

2. Good, they should.
Steroid use can lead to rage and that is not a good thing when you're a cop and under that amount of stress...one can easily "snap"

BTW, welcome to DU! :hi:

3. good
this is what may help stop others. One person cheats, the whole team loses.

4. This will hopefully encourage athletes to help police their own sport
since their accomplishments would be at risk because of someone else's cheating. In the end, I feel bad for the rest of the team, but it's hard to make the case that they deserved the medal in the first place, since they won in part because of Jones' performance. It's not as if they're stripping all Jones' teammates of their medals for wins that Jones did not participate it.

6. I'm not asking for anyone to spy on each other...

but don't turn a blind eye when you know someone is breaking the rules either. All in all, a pretty weak comparison.

7. no one is asking anyone to turn anyone in
but if you trained your whole life for one race, and you suspected a teammember of doping, would you want that person on your team?

8. I really hope these ladies get to keep their medals...maybe there
can be some sort of deal where the gold is now shared with the silver, and 4th moves up to bronze. They trained their entire lives and should not be penalized for Marion Jones' actions.

10. Yeah, but we're not dealing with athletes who are close, personal friends...
...it's not like they hung out and would have known what she was doing. If there was an inkling she was cheating, it's the fault of the US Olympic team leadership, not the individual athletes. An all-around sucky situation.
